See the argument that an even competition and sharing the winners around makes a good competition is laughable. The result is we have 16 mediocre teams, some are just less mediocre than others. No team in this competition would get within 20 of the 1998 Broncos, or the 1996 Manly or the 1990 Raiders teams. Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters are the best teams of the last decade simply for the fact they each made the GF 3 times in a row. If the Storm can make it 4 in a row that's going to be utterly remarkable. What you get with the EPL is the opportunity to watch the best of the best play against the best of the best. Yes, it also means you get to see the best of the best humiliate the worst of the best, but so what? That's still exciting to see the best players let loose and show their talents. The NRL is so even these days that few teams can afford to take any risks early in the game because you simply can't afford to get too far behind or you get destroyed. Plus most teams have a few genuine stars. As soon as they're injured their team becomes so poor it's not worth watching. All due respect to the under 20s, but I as a casual fan wouldn't pay money to go watch Ben Hunt and Dale Copley play. I'd want to see Darren Lockyer and Justin Hodges. I for one would love to see the NRL a 10 team competition with the best of the best players. Have a lower tier comp where the ones that miss out can play against eachother etc, a genuine reserve grade. It'll never happen for $s, but I'd rather see that than a 16 team competition where at least 6 of the teams are just plain shit.
