Brisbane Broncos overhaul attack in a bid to break premiership drought Peter Badel, The Courier-MailFebruary 23, 2017 7:00pm Subscriber only THE Broncos have undergone a drastic overhaul of their attacking structures in a bid to break the longest premiership drought in the club’s history this season. New Broncos skipper Darius Boyd has revealed Brisbane’s game plan to blow rivals off the park as they prepare for Thursday night’s season opener against premiers Cronulla. Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has given his new assistant coach Jason Demetriou the task of reshaping Brisbane’s offence following their second-week finals exit last season. The result is more responsibility for halves Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt, who have been ordered to straighten the Broncos’ attack at every opportunity. Hunt came under fire last season for losing faith in his forte — running the ball — but Boyd says that will change this season as Brisbane look to snap an 11-year title hoodoo. “We have got some new structures in attack this year which I’m really excited about,” Boyd told The Courier-Mail. Pics Tara Croser. “Jason Demetriou has come on board and he has brought in some new structures and shapes that the ballplayers are really enjoying. “It’s more focused around ‘Milf’ and Ben (Hunt). We want them on the ball more and running the ball more. “We want to get the ball in their hands as much as possible. “We’re still learning the new structures and hopefully it leads to plenty of points. “It’s important for it to become muscle memory — we need to have everything in order for round one against the Sharks.” The Broncos weren’t exactly impotent last season. They finished the regular season ranked sixth in the NRL in offence, scoring 554 points at an average of 23 per game. But there were stages last season when Milford and Hunt struggled to take control of Brisbane’s attack, particularly during the mid-season slump that cost the Broncos a top-four berth. Boyd was a formidable threat last season chiming into the line on back-man plays but the classy custodian won’t be expected to lift his involvement. Pic Annette Dew “It’s not so much about me getting involved,” he said. “I don’t think you’ll see as much running from me, it will be more taking control of some attacking shapes on the field and not rushing around to get to certain positions. “There will be a lot more clarity around our attack, which will make Andrew McCullough’s job easier in where to go with the football out of dummy half. “Jason (Demetriou) has also simplified things for the forwards in relation to where they need to be on the field. “I’m excited to see how we are going to attack this year. I think what we’re planning is going to work ... it’s just a matter of perfecting it.”
