There was so many people here getting stuck in when I was calling on Queensland to give DCE this shot, but I don’t think they’ll be quite so vocal after that effort. He clearly had the fire in his belly from the get go, his long kicking game was fantastic and I can remember the first two or three long kicks he had downfield finding the grass and the people I was watching it with all commenting that it was the first time they’d seen a Queensland kick find the grass basically all series. His short kicking game and his patience in building repeat sets was also similarly outstanding and was instrumental in getting Queensland home. I’m sorry but I simply don’t buy that Ben Hunt would have managed such precision and composure and once one of his kicks inevitably rolls dead and NSW get a seven tackle set all that pressure comes off, and you could definitely argue that without that early pressure to wear them down, NSW would likely have been in a better position to pull of something at the end there when the game was in the balance. Thrown into the mix his good work in defence and especially in cover defence, and all in all it’s a great return to the Origin arena for him. Well done to the selectors for making the right decision and giving him the shot he’d earned and good on DCE himself for grabbing that opportunity with both hands and braining it. Hopefully for Queensland’s sake he doesn’t plan on letting go of that jersey again any time soon. Perhaps a bit more practice goal kicking over the offseason and he’ll be almost a lock for the next series. Now he just needs to take the leap and win us a series next year and all will be forgiven. I rate Ash Taylor as a great prospect for the future, but a good 3-4 years out of DCE will mean Queensland aren’t under pressure to pick him before he’s really earned it and he’ll be free to keep working on his game and putting himself in a position where he has to be picked down the track
