I just realised that this was the last Broncos finals game I attended. I was going to go in 2009 to watch the Dragons but didn't want my poor record against St George ruin the Broncos chances. Such a heart-breaking clash, but if there was any silver-lining, at least the Broncos didn't let all the drama engulf them. That was one of the most turbulent weeks I've ever endured as a fan. It seemed like every day, some new scandal was coming out and I was just waiting for something big to drop. However, the boys put it behind them and from memory had the better of Melbourne through out the majority of the contest. My enduring memory was just the bad vibes I had about it. I call it the Red Wedding effect, where it seems like everything is great but something tragic is just lurking around the corner. That lingering doubt remained with me until Slater spilled the ball. At that second, my eye was directly at the clock. I was counting down and things were getting super slow. The rest they say is history. I don't remember being that physically upset after a game before. I wasn't ranting or raving, I just felt like I'd been punched in the guts and smacked right in the middle of the nose. That one hurt... and I think it played into how pissed off I was with the World Cup Final. Thought for sure the season would end on a nice high note and I'd have a story I could tell the grand kids. Instead I watch Ashley Klein decide he's the star of the show and make some of the most baffling calls I've ever seen. Never forgave him for that and blame him for a number of changes for the game. Regardless, like 2002, I don't buy into 2008 being the Broncos year. They did well all things considered but had too many weaknesses in key positions and Locky wasn't quite 100% that year. 2005 and 2011 on the other hand...
