When you have the calibre of players such as Lewis, Langer, Miles etc at your club, you're going to attract other big names who want to join to play along side them. No doubt this is still happening today with players signing because they want to play along side the likes of Lockyer, Hodges etc. The club as it is today, is built on the back of those big names who signed in the early years, with each successive generation of players singing up to play at the club their heros play/played at. Think about it. What child in SEQLD grew up in the late 80s, early 90s wanting to play for the Gold Coast. Did they even have any big names until an aging Lewis joined up in 92? Same with the crushers, and up until maybe 6-7 years ago, the cowboys. I think it's easy to be successful when you have a high calibre of players at your club, and it helps to sign these players when you are the only real option for some of them.
