[QUOTE="leish107, post: 3689535, member: 19803"] As someone who resides between Brisbane and the GC and who often sees Patty out socially (having some overlapping mutual family friends and within the GC surf community), I can say that I have never witnessed the self-absorbed, ego-driven persona that you speak of. Not to say that it doesn’t exist – your experiences might just be different from mine (and no, I am not a Carrigan fan-girl). Whenever I have seen him and the other players out, they have always been well behaved other than having had one too many beers. Do they attract a lot of attention? Yes. Do they, at times, invite and actively encourage that attention by using their public profile to their advantage? Also, yes. Whilst I do not pretend to know the specifics of his relationship status, it’s my understanding that he has been on and off with his ex-partner for most of this year (they holidayed together in Bali at the start of the offseason). When they’re on, they’re on; and when they’re off; they’re off. During which time, like most single 20-something year olds, they explore other options. Perhaps that’s where the f-boy image comes from. If everyone is a consenting adult, then I see no issue with this - and nor is it different to what the other single lads in the team are doing. Given the above, I think it’s difficult to compare Payne and Patty given that they are in such different places in terms of their life circumstances off the field. As such, Patty’s suitability for captaincy should not be judged on the fact that he hasn’t ‘settled down’ yet. It’s clear that he is the ‘big-brother’ and ‘best-mate’ to many in the team and holds considerable sway in the playing group because of it. Whether that translate well into a being a good captain remains to be seen and is probably an area of growth for him – how to separate the personal from the professional. Do I think that the Broncos, Patty and his management are aware of his popularity and good-guy image? Absolutely, they would be stupid not to be. And if he doesn’t do anything overly stupid, they will continue to capitalise on it and image him accordingly (much like Reece and his team are capitalizing on the reformed bad-boy, single dad, doing it for his daughter storyline). Professional sport is all about image and, at present, Patty is more marketable than Payne. Does that mean that he should have the captaincy handed to him? No. However, given the scrutiny that is placed on the Broncos captain by both the media and fans alike, I can’t see them not taking that into consideration when deciding on who follows after Renyo.
