This whole mess is through so many things. The senior playing group lost any semblance of resilience. The introduction of a new coach gave the senior playing group a scapegoat for lazy and weak mentalities. The changed draw and new reffing of 2020 was a hammer blow to a young, inexperienced and mentally susceptible playing group. Let's not forget that we went from 2 wins with a string of weaker teams in front of us, to a new draw against some of the top teams (eels, roosters, manly). This was made worse by new rules, of which we were the test team (playing first on a Thursday night), AND we came close in a few games (manly/knights) but copped bad calls and multiple 6-agains EARLY, to essentially instil fatigue. As I always make the analogy, it's like running a marathon, but starting with hill springs. In much the same way, so was our season. The players cracked. They clearly turned on the coach, on each other, and switched off for the most part. Boyd's gender reveal summed that up perfectly. They gave 0 shits after about Rd 9. Now, you have mentally fragile young players who have no belief in themselves, a pavlovian response to the 6-again bell, a new coach teaching new systems, no trust in a halves combination and probably already switched off for the year and are just waiting for Reynolds to get there. They don't care. They get a pay check, they go out, give it a crack for 20 min, then when the inevitable momentum swing comes, just think "**** it", or probably more than likely think that the guy next to him is thinking that and it ripples down the line. one lazy mistake in the middle and the backs think meh. One shit play by a back and the forwards think "why the **** did I bother running so hard?" Also, now that the V'landysball has been more evenly smeared across the competition, it's becoming clearer how such influences are capable of causing blowout scores. Honestly, the NRL is being seen now by many more than just Broncos fans as a rort, I was never in favour of manipulating the game to prevent blow-outs, simply in consistency in reffing. We still don't have that. We simply have less accountability in the reffing and inconsistency is almost erased by early biases. Teams that give away a penalty string early are now doomed to be disadvantaged throughout the game. Couple that with inconsistent send-offs and sin bins and you've ruined a sport. As if the bunker and refs are impartial. They are not.
