Wayne would have remained the coach if Paul White's meeting with Bellamy wasn't made public. Nobody could blame White for chasing after the best coach in the game but the fallout was ugly and it made Bennett's position at the club untenable. Ideally the meeting would never have come to light, Bennett would have signed on and retired at the end of that contract, say 2021. The day was always going to come for Bennett to retire. Bennett was brought here to win a premiership and after four seasons he couldn't get the job done. It's a completely unfair assessment of what he's brought to the club, but that's the cut-throat mentality of the Rugby League business for you. It's a 'what have you done for me lately' industry and you can be Brian Smith 2010 one moment than Brian Smith 2011 the next. Or Daniel Anderson, or Ivan Cleary, or Anthony Griffin or any super-coach. It's just a matter of having a goal in mind and picking the coach who will achieve that job. Want a premiership in the next 3 years? Go with Madge. Want to play an attractive brand of football and win fans and the media? Go with Seibold. Want to promote the club's values and go with somebody with a marketable resume? Go with Kev. They just have to make a decision and not for one second doubt themselves like they did with Henjak. Everyone doggy piles on Henjak, but forgets how much pressure Cullen put him under. Bruno had so much faith in him, he signed up a bunch of assistants just to help him out.
