Brisbane Broncos snubbed Kevin Walters because he is Wayne Bennett 2.0 If this theory is true it’s a fair insult to two Broncos legends. Written By STEVE ORME @SteveOSportal Club legend Justin Hodges believes the Brisbane Broncos will steer away from appointing fan-favourite Kevin Walters as the club’s next head coach because he is too similar to departing mentor Wayne Bennett. South Sydney coach Anthony Seibold is expected to be named as Bennett’s successor for the 2020 NRL season after the Broncos board meets on Tuesday. There is some suggestion Seibold and Bennett will swap jobs immediately after the latter signed a two-year deal with the Rabbitohs on Thursday for the 2020 and 2021 NRL seasons. Either way, it appears certain Walters, who won five premierships with the Broncos as a player and has previously served as an assistant coach, won’t get the top job. “It’s a bit of a tough one, for me I think the only reason why it won’t go to Kev is because he’s a similar sort of (coach) to Wayne,” Hodges, who believes Walters was the best man for the job, told Fox Sports News. “He’s learned off Wayne, he’s learned off Craig Bellamy and I always thought he was the right man for the job but I just think the club wants a different direction to what’s happened in the past.” “… I think the reason why Wayne’s leaving and if they don’t go with Kevvie Walters, they want someone to come in with a different direction and a different voice to try and change the culture a little bit. “And I think that’s probably why he’s (Seibold) the front-runner and he’s been a part of the Queensland Origin system as well so he’s been around some great players and had a lot of success. “So I think that’s where the Broncos want to go in a different direction.” Meanwhile, Hodges believes his former coach Bennett genuinely wants to stay at Red Hill in 2019 in a bid to deliver a seventh premiership to the Broncos. “I think he will stay, unless the club sack him and bring Anthony in straight away,” Hodges said. “But I think he will stay, he wants to see out his tenure here and I think he’s got some unfinished business, he wants to win another competition. “He knows there’s some great, young players coming through the Broncos’ system so I don’t see Wayne making the decision that he wants to leave … I think he’ll try and see out this year.”
