If ever Maroons coach Kevin Walters needed any reassurance it was time to move 29-game Queensland veteran Nate Myles on from his starting spot, it came on Saturday night. And it came in the form of Broncos prop Josh McGuire. The 26-year-old outplayed Myles in every aspect of the game, as he made his best statement yet for a Maroons recall. While it has been Queensland’s way for years to stick with their winning formula and ageing team, Myles is expected to this year bow out of the starting side for the in-form McGuire. He admitted it himself this week and did little during last night’s double header clash at Suncorp Stadium to show Walters any reason why that should not be the case. From the very first kick-off, McGuire was always one step ahead of his opponent. He gave it his all for 55 minutes straight, making 16 runs for 122m, 28 tackles and one offload in that time. In comparison, Myles churned out just under 45 minutes and managed to make just five runs for 36m and 30 tackles. McGuire’s skipper Corey Parker said it was just a matter of “wait and see” for his fellow forward following last night’s performance, but also did not think Myles was out of the running to retain his starting jersey. “He’s certainly playing some good footy for us and he’s got to continue that,” Parker said of McGuire. “We’ll wait and see what comes of it. “There’s a guy in the other team that does a fair job for Queensland too.” Despite Parker’s belief in his Maroons teammate, the fact was Myles was not doing enough to provide the support his halves desperately needed. McGuire on the other hand laid the platform for Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford to run amok as Brisbane claimed the match 30-6. McGuire even took a moment to test out his own playmaking skills, kicking through on the last tackle in the 38th minute. If Daly Cherry-Evans was not there to scoop the ball up, it could have been one of the forward’s best tries of his career. Brisbane’s other Origin hopeful, Corey Oates, was fairly quiet throughout the match, before scoring the final try off a brilliant pass from Darius Boyd. Oates was only kept quiet due to Anthony Milford taking most of his opportunities for himself, running in two tries as opposed to swinging the ball out to his towering winger. Brisbane also used the right side of their attack a lot more last night. Next week he will definitely need to make himself noticed by Walters, as he faces fellow aspiring Maroon Kyle Feldt in the highly-anticipated clash with the Cowboys.
