Why McCullough injury could ignite Milford
ANTHONY Milford is now Brisbane’s boss and Darren Lockyer believes the responsibility will ignite the Broncos’ million-dollar man. Halfback Ben Hunt’s shift to replace injured hooker Andrew McCullough will see Milford become Brisbane’s chief shot-caller for the remainder of the season. It is a role that Milford has thrived in this year. When Hunt missed five matches with a hamstring strain, Milford lifted alongside Kodi Nikorima, leading the Broncos to five consecutive wins. Milford’s form has been patchy in his three games back from a shoulder injury at five-eighth, his worst performance coming in last Friday’s loss to Parramatta. But legendary Broncos No. 6 Lockyer said being lumped with more responsibility could be a way for the Broncos to bring out the best of Milford beginning in Saturday’s derby against the Titans at Cbus Super Stadium. “He will become the dominant half and sometimes that can become a good thing,” he said. “He’s coming back from a shoulder injury and is probably a little bit tentative still. “Nikorima and Milford did well when Ben wasn’t in the team.” The Broncos have won the six matches Milford and Nikorima have started in the halves together this season. Milford, 23, took more of a commanding role when Hunt was out of the team, stepping into first receiver to guide the Broncos. Coach Wayne Bennett has declared Nikorima and Milford will be his first-choice halves next year and Broncos fans will get another glimpse of the combination over at least the next five weeks. “It doesn’t really worry me (who I play with),” Milford said. “I know whoever I have by my side is going to do a job. “That first couple of weeks Ben was out, Kodi really stepped up and took it among himself to make that jersey his own. “We’ve got good depth with Benji (Marshall) and Kodi. It doesn’t worry us too much. We’ll find a way.” Milford requires surgery on his shoulder but is hoping to make it through until the end of the season before going under the knife. “The more I worry about it, it plays on my head,” he said. “I don’t let any of that come into consideration.” http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/nrl/teams/broncos/darren-lockyer-believes-andrew-mcculloughs-injury-could-ignite-anthony-milford/news-story/b2190f79013b86c55c65ea7d4b0d47d2
