Kevin Walters in a coaching role

Is he on our radar, whether as assistant, attacking or head coach for the Broncos?

Surely he'd have to be getting close to a run at an NRL side soon given some of the others getting NRL experience at the moment.

I think he would be a great fit with our young halves who desparately need constant guidance from an experienced half
 
He has a gig in Melb and was sacked by us after 2005 (I think ), he probably wouldn't want to come back unless it was as head coach.

I knew he was Bellamy's assistant and that seems to be a rails run into NRL coaching role.

Maybe when he comes off contract? I mean, it was Henjak that turfed him I thought?

No, Bennett sacked Walters, Belcher, Lazarus and brought in (or up) Henjak as his assistant. Walters was Bennett's assistant coach at the time.

Do you think though, givne Bennett has moved on (and the Broncos moved on from Bennett) that Kevvie would ever come back and coach and would it be a good move?

Oh look there's no doubt it's possible. I'm not sure Walters holds a grudge against the club, and as you say, Bennett and Cullen (who were the axe men) are gone. So maybe he'll feel happier about the idea.

There's also no doubt he's learnt a lot since then with his stints in the Super League and now at Melbourne.

But I wouldn't be moving Griffin to a "director of coaching" or football manager position. No reason he can't remain head coach. Have Walters as an assistant coach in charge of the attacking game plan etc.

No reason they can't keep Alf around as assistant as well, though I'm not seeing anything much from him to suggest he's got a future in coaching beyond being the water boy.
 
Get the Walker Brothers in there as attacking coaches. They've done a pretty good job with Ipswich.
 
If we're looking for somebody to improve or alter our attack, Kevvie isn't the right coach.

He's been brought up in the way of the Bronco, particularly when we became a grinding side, he has strong suits as a coach but not in areas we need improving.

Lockyer also wouldn't really boost the senior squad at all really. What would he have to teach somebody like Wallace, Norman or Hunt that he hadn't been teaching them for years?

He'd be handy for the 20s though.

Perfect, demoting Griffin like that would just be rude.

Someone to sit under Griffin as an assistant/attack coach?

Or perhaps just an off-season consultant like Johns or [insert someone else]

Fair call. I have a feeling Locky might step back from footy as time goes by.
 
How's about we give it more than one season to judge whether the Broncos need new coaches, and staff? We have a very young team who are being guided around the field by a pretty average half-back.

We came out of the blocks way too early this season. No different to any other season where things have died off. When we were winning, the boys looked fresh and energetic. Still sprinting back for a 20m restart even if it was 10 minutes from the end of the game, and the opposition couldn't win.

They were dead in their tracks towards the end of the year. They are all young, we had a few key injuries, and the team, and staff, will learn from it.

It's not the end of the world. At the end of the day, we did make the finals, we did give it a crack, and we didn't win.
 
I think the gist of things was more along the lines of the current staff realising their weak areas and getting the necessary help in, not so much replacing anyone just yet.

Nailed it.

We've had two seasons under Griffin, with pretty much the same squad - minus Lockyer this year.

The first season we did remarkably well, and probably could've gone all the way if not for an extremely unfortunate injury to a player integral to our attack.

The second season we started brightly, and were being hyped up by a lot of 'respected' voices in the game. We faded badly, limped into the finals, and it was pretty depressing to watch!

But, as the Nashman said, it's not the end of the world. There are plenty of things the players and coaching staff alike will have learnt from this season and we'll be better off for it.

At the end of the day, our side is still ridiculously young, and as a result, we have a lot of inexperienced players who aren't used to dealing with certain situations that the game throws up. The more they play though, the more they'll become accustomed to the issues they face over the course of the season.

I'm keen for the future. :rockon:
 
What Dexter said. I find any talk of sacking Griffin laughable, and that's not withstanding justified criticism of his use of the bench, his use of certain players, and his general game plans late in the season. But those are areas he simply needs to work on and improve, absolutely no reason to think about replacing him.

But from the outside I do think something's missing in the training staff. The players all seem to have a good attitude, they're enthusiastic at training, they're trying their best (Despite some accusations to the contrary on here) but there's something just missing. Obviously that's Darren Lockyer, but he's gone, so we have to find a way to patch over that gaping hole and that means getting more out of the players that relied on him so much when it came to the crunch.

There is no Lockyer there, and at the moment there's nobody in the playing group with anywhere near his nous or leadership, so it's got to be a combination of individual players stepping up to do more, and the coaching staff empowering them to do so by giving them new ideas and strategies.

Perhaps a new consultant, or full time assistant from outside the club can bring that fresh approach to things.

Big offseason ahead.
 
I love Griffin, I don't doubt one bit that he can lead us to a premiership, however, he needs to bring in help for offensive gameplans, coz right now, we aren't cutting it.
 
Does our coaching staff seem a bit light on?? I am happy with Hook but another set of eyes and ears wouldn't hurt.
