That was an interesting interview from Herbie.

JT basically asked 'So you're off contract. What's going on? Are you on the way out or do you absolutely love it here and plan on staying as long as you can?'

Herbie's demeanour changed and basically said he'll leave it to his manager and they'll announce something in a few weeks.

Didn't sound too good for the Broncos.
Yeah, noticed that too

What are your feelings, Pete?

I’m a big fan of Herbie but I’ve come around to the idea of losing him. He doesn’t look suited to left centre and will cost too much on a wing. I think we’d better balance our team by putting an affordable reliable craftsman at centre who can defend well and set up his winger.

If he wants to go then let him go. He's a handy player, but his unwillingness to pass when the opportunity presents is really starting to grate, and it isn't like we haven't got a ready made centre in Cobbo or Brenko Lee sitting there waiting to slot in. It's the same story as Haas, I would love to keep him, but we have far bigger problems to deal with.

I think he's had some great games at centre and deserves to be there for us but he just isn't adding anything to his game with the lack of passing. Teams know he will run it. He might be better on the right but nowhere near staggs level and tbh I'm not sure he would pass more on that side anyway, he never even LOOKS to pass it in either direction.

I think we save a few $100,000 and keep Oates and another solid 3/4 as back up instead. Spend that money on any spine player. I'd be willing to pay more for farnworth if he was happy to play wing if need be (not to say I'd put him there but the option in the future would safeguard our backing from holes). Wtf is with our players and not being happy with just being in the team (nikorima, Hoffman, isaako ffs they prove us right nearly every time though lol)

I think the Broncos preference would be to keep him at this stage, if only a short term deal. He reminds me a lot of Reuben Garrick, just a really honest club player who makes a lot of strong carries.

Take for instance tonight's game where he defused a tough kick in the second half, stepped in between defenders and got it out to the 20. Great run that alleviated all the pressure the Broncos were under.

It wouldn't be the end of the world for the Broncos and there's a few ways it could play out. I still believe Cobbo's future lies in the centres and I believe he's capable of playing left if need be. Quai-Ward has made improvements to his game and could be a handy option if he continues to develop his game. He has a few rough edges but he doesn't shirk his responsibilities either. Hoeter and Lee could be handy stop-gap options as well and there's still Arthars to return. Still, I think it will be a downgrade for the club and they'll have to put that money to good use.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Oates. I think the Broncos will be inclined to keep him but he's beginning to become a lot like Vidot and Plowman. Handy players but not really ideal wingers who help skittle the defence ala To'o and the like.

The press conference with Reynolds and Kev also didn't sound too convincing I thought..
Kev was asked about Herbie from Dobbo but talked about Kotoni the added a little about Herbie and then Reynolds chimed in and spoke about Kotoni.
Was asked about Herbie again and said he looks good in maroon and we intend on keeping him in those colours.

I didn't get such a negative reaction from the interview, he says I love this place, just trying to focus on my footy. Will leave it to my manager etc

It would be ideal if brenko or hoeter were playing left centre in QCup. Brenko has a very good pass on him and can position his winger well (at least on the right side) and hoeter looked decent enough out there against the panthers. EQW is not ready yet.

As others have said, I am not sure what the plans with cobbo are, but he is a left hand carrier of the ball which would make him an ideal left centre as he could fend covering defenders with his right and give a flick pass with his left.

Yeah I’m not reading much into it. He’s apparently been given 2 weeks or the broncos pull his contract. He can’t say “yeah I 100% want to stay. Love it here” because his manager is still trying to squeeze the best offer they can, regardless of where he goes.

So, strawpoll: did Herbie's value go up or down last night?

It was the lightbulb moment for many that this kid won't share the ball with anyone else. But, he had a blinder in defence, scored a try and would've potted that conversion Reynolds missed. If you overlook the 12-18 points he pissed away by being hog, he outpointed Ramien, who's no slouch.

I genuinely don't know what to do with him. Even wingers have to pass the ball occasionally. Xavier Coates, who is a bumbling gumby you'd never move to the centres, has 3 try assists this season.

He's worth an upgrade if he's on something $200-250K now. I'd offer him $300 -350K tops to sty. If he wants more I'd say jog on mate.

The thing is he needs to develop the skill of passing to his winger. Once he perfects that he'll be close to being an elite centre. Until then he can be costly. But some of his defence and kick returns last night were outstanding.

No more then 400k for the love bug. I love him, and I’d hate to see him at the dolphins because he is a genuine footballer and has been here since 15. He’s re-signed in the shit years a couple of years back which makes him even more likeable.

He makes strong carries and is a very handy footballer. He scores us tries but also costed us 2 tries in last nights game alone.

He said with JT last night that he “loves this club” and also posted a story on insta saying “love these boys” so I’m not so sure he’s made his mind up just yet.
If we keep wining, it’ll increase our chances of retaining him, no doubt.
I genuinely don’t know what he is going to do, but fingers crossed he stays, at the right price..

I guess it depends why he's a hog. Being able to draw an opponent, put them in two minds and either dummy or pass, is something you develop as a sixth sense, fairly young. He's a bit old to be learning it from scratch.

I thought Kevvie would've picked up on it and drilled the **** out of him in the preseason. Or at the very least bawled him out over it. Pretty sure he'll be copping it this week. Let's see if he makes an effort to look sideways.

One option, would be to put that issue on the table, offer him a year extension at an upgrade, and tell him if he fixes his passing game, he'll get a performance review. The main thing being he has the next year locked in regardless, which also gives him time to get a look at the Dolphins.

I think we'd like to keep him, but not if he's going to continue being a cul de sac in attack.

Thing is where do we put Mariner when he's ready?
