SAM Thaiday will retire within two years and has ruled himself out of the race for the Broncos captaincy next season.Thaiday’s long-range retirement decision will hold him back from chasing the Broncos leadership role when Corey Parker retires at the end of this season.
Thaiday had been considered a main contender for the role next year but the veteran forward, who captained Brisbane for two seasons from 2012, is not keen to return to the top job.
He believes the responsibility should go to a younger player, revealing that he has his sights set on retiring at the end of 2018 when his contract is up.
“No thanks. I’m more than happy to let one of the young guys that are going to be at our club for many, many years have it,” he said.
“I’ll support whoever that is 100 per cent. We have some great young kids and some great talent that is going to be at our club for years to come.
“Next year will be my second-last season with the club. I’d much prefer to see it go to a young guy.’’
Among those who still have a number of years left and are considered to have leadership potential are fullback Darius Boyd and hooker Andrew McCullough, while 30-year-old prop Adam Blair is also a favourite for the role.
The New Zealand forward said earlier this week the captaincy would be a great honour but he was trying to keep his focus on this season.

Halfback Ben Hunt and winger Corey Oates told The Courier-Mail this week that they had already started thinking about winning a premiership for their skipper.
But Blair has advised his teammates not to get ahead of themselves in case they burn too much energy before October.
“It’s hard enough getting into a grand final, let alone thinking of trying to win one for Corey,” Blair said.
“If we start thinking about doing things for Corey, we start burning up a lot of energy individually.
“The most important thing for us is making sure we’re going out there and performing as a group so that we get the rewards for Corey. We can’t be thinking about (winning) for him.’’
Nah, give it to Boyd. Milf is too young.
