At a guess, I'd say that the coaches want him there to lead at training. When I played for Newy Uni, the Knights sometimes trained on the next field, so after training sometimes I'd stop to watch them for a bit. Gidley was always the most competitive trainer.

I don't actually mind them, reinforces the exhibition feel of the match and it gives fans something to look forward to. I mean, how many times have you been to the footy or a pub and you've been in on or heard somebody suggest the NRL should bring such and such rule into it?

The one problem I have with this game is that it looks like it's going to be on the Gold Coast every year. These are two teams with no home ground; why not take this show on the road and expose RL-starved markets to the sport? Alternate the city every year. I can't think of a better way to promote the sport than to send the 40 most popular players into a new market for a week of signing autographs.
The BEST thing about City V Country is that it's played in places where top-flight rugby league is otherwise non-existant - Albury, Wagga Wagga, etc get a chance to see some of the big names right in their backyard.
Perth has a bid for an NRL side and strong local leagues (not to mention a large Aboriginal community); send the All Stars game over there to gauge the level of interest.
Adelaide's been mentioned as a possible expansion area before; what kind of a crowd will they get to a game featuring almost all the superstars of rugby league?
Melbournians always turn out in droves to representative matches played there (Tests and Origin), it would be a great way to raise the profile of the game and attract attention for the Storm right on the eve of the new season.
Shit, take the game to Darwin. They'd be over the moon to have any kind of sport played there.
