Superstar recruit Benji Marshall has stated that he has no interest in stealing his position away, instead vowing to help Broncos five-eighth Anthony Milford grow from prodigious talent into NRL elite.

On his first day at his new club on Monday, Marshall and Milford were drawn together instantly, the kindred spirits rekindling a friendship that was formed when Milford was a teen prodigy at the Canberra Raiders.

At that time Marshall was visiting good friend Bronson Harrison who had four years at Canberra from 2009-2012 and made a point to meet a young man with fast feet who reminded the former Kiwi captain very much of himself.

With his unexpected arrival at Red Hill, Marshall now shapes as a key figure in the Milford narrative and the ability of the 22-year-old with 95 NRL games already to his name to handle the pressure and expectation that invariably follows players of rare talent.

If and when Marshall makes his Broncos debut in 2017 it will be the 256th game of his decorated career and his first piece of advice is to avoid the mistake that has plagued him in recent years and always remember to run.

"I've known 'Milf' for a long time, even before coming here," Marshall revealed on day one with his new club. "I just admire the way he plays.

"I thought last year was one of his best years, the first half of the competition, and this being my 15th season in the NRL I feel that I can help with experience and calming nerves.

"He's not too dissimilar to the way I played and if I can give him any advice it will be along the lines of what I've lost in the last couple of years.

"Don't get caught being the ball-player. Play what's your strength and for him I think it's his running game."

How Marshall fits into the Broncos make-up for Round 1 – if he indeed does at all – is one of the most intriguing sub-plots of the NRL pre-season.

Upon arrival at Broncos HQ the 31-year-old stated that he has no interest in usurping either Milford or Ben Hunt in the halves while Kodi Nikorima is unlikely to give up his status as the team's super-sub on the interchange bench without significant resistance.

With no guarantees that he will feature in the top 17, NRL.com understands that Broncos-affiliated Intrust Super Cup clubs have already begun sounding out Marshall in an attempt to lure him to their club should he not be playing NRL.

Marshall admitted that he had received phone calls from interested Intrust Super Cup clubs but that his focus remains very much on playing in the NRL on a weekly basis.

"The phone hasn't stopped going to be honest," Marshall said.

"I've had to not answer any calls for the last six weeks which has been pretty hard but my immediate goal is to not end up playing there.

"There's a fair chance that could happen so we'll just have to see what the Broncos think about where I play. I honestly don't know about that but my goal is to be the best again and be in the top 17.

"One of the key things that Wayne (Bennett, Broncos coach) mentioned to me was that he wanted to see me with a smile on my face and happy and coming in and playing the way I want to play.

"I want to have a fun year and if that's playing in that grade then it is but I'm a professional and pretty competitive so I'm not going to die wondering, trying to make the top 17 that's for sure."

Admitting that towards the end of his third season with St George Illawarra that he considered it may be his farewell season, Marshall said that signing a one-year deal with Brisbane provides the opportunity to go out on his own terms playing the way he wants to play.

"That's one of the key things that Wayne was interested in, that it wasn't about the money for me," Marshall said.

"Obviously you want to get paid as much as you can while you're in this short-term job but for me it's not so much about the money.

"It's about finishing the way I want to finish and being able to enjoy footy playing the way that I want to play."

Give hunt some kicking tips while you're at it bunji

Be fair, playing in a team like the dragons of 2016, perhaps he thought that guy in row 25 would be more effective attacking option

Apparently, he actually practices those flick passes a lot... they're not flukes.

Yeah i've heard that. Apparently also he reckons he could nail a 25 metre flick pass

I'd love to get Admiral Ackbar's thoughts on this positive Benji Marshall press.

Yeah and I've seen thurston miss simple conversions, cronk shank cross field kicks and Darius boyd the australian fullback drop high ball sitters... he's fucking good at his flick passes. He shanked one really bad and everyone smashes him for it. He's also done one thing... BEATEN THE COWBOYS IN A GRAND FINAL WITH ONE. something our guys can't seem to do so everyone should maybe give him a break.

Rant over :) I'm happy to have him at our club. He's an absolute asset to us

Well put Marty! I admire the guys honesty with the media and supporters alike. Looks like here's come here with the right attitude. We won't be sending him to Thai rehab centres or seeing kids go without aoutographs. With broncos4life..I like the signing more each day

It's criminal that we will at best win 1/3 premierships during this premiership "window".

Without any argument, the strongest roster in the competition.

Qld State of Origin forward pack, Australian and NZ fullback, Roberts, Oates, Milford, plus a supporting cast of representative players... and NOW Benji Marshall (albeit a 31 year old Marshall).

One downfall - kicking game and composure.

Can Benji add that..not from the centres.

He can at weekly training. He'll be in the ear of our halves everyday.

Forwards getting dominated up the middle isnt the kickers fault btw.
This.

This is the potentially the biggest thing at the moment with our halfback situation.

Ben Hunt is a ball runner and a creator. His style is to find gaps in defence and exploit the line, opening spaces and putting himself or others through holes. He and Milford both are line breakers. That's their strength. Actually the reason we do so well is we don't bend the line with our forwards but crack and break it open with our backs (eating up valuablr territory through the middle that was lost in previous sets due to smaller forwards)

However we've been found out the last two seasons in the big games where what it would of taken to win the premiership was "better game management". Hunt doesn't have a lot of experience with this kind of grinding style. Putting pressure on teams through "good kicking game" because again, he's not that sort of half.

The last two years we've always been very strong in one particular stat. And that's points from attacking territory. We were always "tackled in opposition territory a low percentage of times" but almost always up there with points per percentage. Meaning when we do get attacking opportunities, we almost score everytime. This is why i don't understand our team (with weak forward pack)'s decision to take the two. We're gifting them the field position (that our forwards will struggle to regain) for half the points we could gain if we score a try (which again, percentages tell us that with our halves, we most of the time score when given opportunities in their d zone)

So in the grand final when we were trying to "protect" our tiny lead...if hunt and milford instead were just trying to score MORE points, we would almost have done so but instead we kept kicking to corners for a scrum. A cowboys forward pack then just barged it back up the field for attacking opportunities. We should of protected or lead by increasing it. These Broncos shouldn't play conservative football. Doesn't work to our pack or halves' strengths. (It's how we offed melbourne this year, played calculated risk football against the odds - our players are skillfull enough to pull it off)

I think even Thurston and Cronk would struggle without the type of front row they have. Their forwards can bend the line, when our team rely on breaking it for our attacking opportunities. Cronk and Thurston are masters of getting repeat sets. Now this is where it starts to compare..

I said earlier that we almost always score points when we have sets of 6 in our attacking zone (because our backline is fucking awesome who are reliable point scorers) but, when we do score points, we again are gifting the opposition the upper hand in field position again ! This is a very key point.. instead of scoring points each attacking opportunity... we need to build pressure by getting repeat sets first. This will tire the big forwards out from defending set after set, and then when we do get back into the grind of the field possession battle, we might just have hurt them enough to get the upper hand in that area.

This is what people are complaining about. Hunt not being able to "game manage" from his kicking game. But it would help if we had a better forward to bend the line. So all the hate on hunt and saying he'll "never win us a premiership" is garbage. All he needs to work on is getting repeat sets. That's the only thing we are missing at the moment.

The coaching staff need to pickup on this as a tactic we are losing out on and inform our backs that repeat sets are probably more important than points scored. We know our backs can score points, we just need to stop allowing ourselves to be muscled out of a match.
