Broncos extortion attempt

I thought the player in question denied it? Seems to be an odd thing to do if they know they did it and they know there is video out there of it. I'm still thinking bullshit. @talanoa , if it turns out to be true would it be a complete disaster for our season in terms of the players' calibre?

Could be good news from a salary cap perspective....especially if the player has been playing like a busted arse but is on good coin....and no beyond the spec in social media I have no idea who it is....I am just taking a glass half full approach....
 
Players taking drugs meant to actually cheat get 3 weeks, and people want to end someone's career for taking a recreational drug, which if anything, will cause them to perform worse on the field (unless taken immediately before a game)? Get a grip!

Punishment should depend on previous behaviour and more importantly, include help to prevent re-incidence.

The Sharks were a BS case.

Take drugs = sacked in my book. Particularly if it frees up a good chunk of salary cap
space.

Well it doesn't matter if the drug is recreational, it's illegal. I agree with those who said their contract should be torn up. If another club wants them after a reasonable suspension has finished then good luck to them. Our club doesn't need this bullshit right now.

If it is true then I will be very upset for the club and other players who place their trust in their team mate
On the other hand I am starting to doubt if it 100% legit for the following reasons
1. So the video is 8 to 10 seconds - so the grub who took the video JUST happens to walk into the toilet at the exact second the alleged player starts snorting the stuff off the toilet lid while the player has left the toilet door wide open or does he say to the player - hang on mate wait until i get my phone on camera here and film it so i can get a few grand from all this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - you follow my drift
2. so in 8 to 10 second after being there at the exact second it goes down the alleged player snorts it down then looks up and says don't send this to anyone otherwise it will ruin my career - really - how appropriate for all that to occur in those exact 8 to 10 seconds
3. and its a grainy video - since when are iphones or samsung phones or the like so bad it is grainy - seriously
And all this happens at those exact 8 to 10 seconds in time - I think it is a set up or i certainly hope so
 
Have been over on Zero Tackle, a couple of fools have named a player they say is involved but make of it what you will as it is probably rubbish anyway.

The people on that site are worse than those on the LU forums. Absolute cesspool of rugby league stupidity.
 
I would love to see players start suing people for defamation. The amount of baseless accusations and names being said on Twitter and sites like zerotackle are ridiculous.
 
SAM Thaiday believes the two recent extortion scandals to hit the NRL are just the beginning of a worrying trend.

The Broncos became embroiled in a video drama on Saturday night when it was revealed that one of their players had become the subject of an extortion attempt — the second to arise in the NRL in the past week.

A Sydney person was trying to sell a video to media outlets of what they allege is a Broncos star using cocaine, with the news emerging just hours before Brisbane’s 30-10 Round 19 win over South Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

The revelation also came just days after someone tried to shop around a sex tape involving Parramatta playmaker and former Bronco Corey Norman.

Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce was also suspended at the start of the year, after a member of the public sold a now infamous video to media outlets showing him heavily intoxicated and pretending to have sex with a dog.

And Thaiday believes these tapes are just the beginning.

While he could not comment directly on the matter regarding the Broncos, the forward claims these incidents are “sad” but also a reflection of how the world is changing with technology.

“It’s the world and society we live in these days,” he said.

“People want their five minutes of fame so there are going to be more and more of these things happening.

“It is sad to see but as football players we need to recognise and realise that there’s cameras everywhere these days. You have to make sure you’re on your best behaviour at all times.”

The Rugby League Players Association also warned that a trend to film players doing private things and then shop the video was developing.

RLPA CEO Ian Prendergast said that players had a right to privacy.

“We are concerned with the apparent trend that seems to be emerging regarding people being filmed without their knowledge and this footage then being shopped around and, on occasions, published via social and traditional media,” he said.

“This conduct, on the face of it, is illegal.

‘‘It’s important in our view that this area of the law is reviewed to ensure the basic privacy rights of all citizens in society are protected.”

But Prendergast also said players needed to be more responsible for their own actions.

While he did not agree with these videos being shopped around, he said there were a few players who continued to make bad choices that needed to be helped.

“We can’t ignore the issues surrounding a small number of players who are making bad choices,” he said.

“We need to develop a better understanding of why they are behaving this way so we can address the issues in an effective way.

“What we now need to address is how we better connect with the small number that are not engaging at the moment.”

you are 100% correct, its out of there system within 24 hours majority of the time.
 
Doesn't it seem like most of the time its some idiot in their company taking a video or photo, sending it to someone as a laugh then it gets sent to so on and so on.

Players should be allocated Nokia 3310s for emergencies only they are that stupid.

THE NRL integrity unit will ask for a free preview of footage allegedly showing a Broncos player taking cocaine, which has been shopped around for $70,000.

The NRL’s first steps would be to contact media organisations sounded out to buy the images and then the third party who made the offer on behalf of the filmer.

“The integrity unit will make inquiries about where we can obtain the film,’’ an NRL spokesman said.

“We got media inquiries on it and the Broncos said they had looked into the matter and there was no need to take it any further.

“Now we are more aware of it, we will certainly ask as part of a normal investigation if we can see it and make our own inquiries.

‘‘It’s dependent on whether the person is willing to hand over the tape.

“It obviously appears they are trying to get some money.

‘‘We won’t be (paying).’’

The incident is said to have happened in Sydney after Brisbane lost 40-14 to Canterbury at ANZ Stadium on June 25.

The Broncos said they became aware of the allegations against one of their players in the middle of last week and club management informed the NRL.

“If we can’t see it (the images) we will have to go on what evidence is around, the player’s evidence and the club’s evidence,’’ the NRL spokesman said.

As the matter is alleged to have happened in Sydney, any further investigation would be up to NSW police, who last night refused to comment to The Courier-Mail.

Former Broncos premiership winner Kerrod Walters said that while he felt the behaviour of league players was collectively at a high standard, he had no sympathy for any player who allowed themselves to be filmed using drugs.

“When they sign a half a million-a-year contract they know what is required so I don’t have sympathy for people who break those rules.

“The game has moved forward in leaps and bounds since I played (in the 1990s) and generally the behaviour of the players is very good.’’

Former Maroons star Walters admitted social media scrutiny was a challenge for today’s sportsmen but one they should be prepared for.

Is there much they can do unless they see the video or an image of the incident. The player has denied that he was the person being filmed. Unless there is other evidence that we are unaware of?
