I find it extremely rich that journalists are taking credit for retiring one of the game's most decorated players.
Smith has had a view on retirement since 2017. He wasn't certain how rep retirement would affect his football, but it's reinvigorated his football and he's put together some of his best performances these past couple of years.
There would be no shame in him pulling the pin now. He's got nothing left to prove and he'll retire as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game.
It'll be interesting to see how he'll be received in retirement. I presume he'll become a talking head on FoxSports, but nothing leads me to believe he'll be able to win the public over like say Ennis has with his commentary. Considering the career he has had, he should be celebrated as a living legend, but somehow I think sections of the media will look to knock him down a peg or three.
