Gould: Broncos cheated cap

Gould just made the extraordinary accusation on the Sunday Roast that the Broncos cheated the cap during their premiership wins! It's one thing for fans to speculate it, I reckon it's entirely uncool for an alleged journalist makes such a statement.

I said this in the other thread, but I think this deserves a thread of its own so will bring it over here.

It is common knowledge that we were over the cap in 2006, but it was only a minor amount and it was not cheating, it was, simply put, a clerical error, which we admitted to before the auditors even picked it up. That's not cheating. And we were fined accordingly and copped it on the chin. Life goes on.
 
I'm not sure that's what he was referring to. More so the teams of 1992-93 and 2000.
 
Yeah, outrageous accusation, that wasn't backed with any facts. Gould, can say some sensible things, like stopping the clock when the ball goes out of play, but he also is a bit reckless with his suggestions and often offers no real solutions or facts to back up what he has to say.
 
What exactly were the salary cap stipulations in 92-93??
 
There have always been rumours that we've been over the cap during our Premiership wins (more-so the last 4). I know we were technically over in 2006 but don't think it was significant. For him to try and compare it to Storm's breach of the salary cap is ridiculous. Storm were systemic in their cheating of the cap. It's not comparable.

I like Gould but his behaviour today was disappointing. Me thinks he is still not over the whole Superleague thing. He is usually pretty good in keeping his cool but definitely let his guard down today.
 
I don't know how people could accuse the Broncos of cheating the cap in 2000. It was basically a rebuilding year for the club, yet they somehow turned it into their best ever season.
 
Wasn't just Gould today; the entire panel threw their hands up in the air as if to suggest "Yeah, we all know they did". Gould just spoke about it, MG and TK shrugged and went along with it.

If the Broncos got away with it for 20 years, props to them - but I seriously doubt they systemically rorted the cap. Going overs due to some match payments or having to use U20's isn't what the cap is there for.
 
Perhaps we have in the past like when we had 9 origin players in the one go.
However no one knows unless it's proven and saying that WE DID as if it's a fact is pretty lame.

The Broncos may even sue Gould here.
 
He had to find a way to get back at QLD for winning 5 in a row! He is very precise with his comments! I would like to see the Broncos ask for an offical "please explain" from Gus and the proof to back up his outragous comments!!!!!
 
Gould would have a less of an idea about what the Broncos players are paid than anyone else in the world.

i remember a few years ago when ch9 stopped him commenting on games QLD teams and in particular the Broncos played in because they received so many complaints about his totally biased commentary... he is a tool of the highest order

Coxy has addressed the "9 players in a year" thing before. But player like Lote,Sailor,Tate ect at the time were still on their original "Nobody's" contract.
 
Looking at the 06 team, we had a lot of good players. But a fair few of them would have been on much less back then.

We would've had a ton of guys on good money that season but only the likes of Lockyer and Webby would be on really big coin.
 
I seriously think that if he making a public accusation that the club definitely cheated the cap (I didn't see the show, so don't know exacatly what he said), then he should be forced to provide definitive proof or should be sued accordingly. And if Ch 9 take no action against him, then they should be sued as well.

If he merely speculated then meh - people are always doing that.
 
But remember as well that I'm pretty sure 95% of the 06 team were broncos juniors so surely they wouldve been paid accordingly and accepted lower $ to stay with a champion team.
