How do we fix: Canberra Raiders

Gotta say I'm surprised by this thread popping up. After 15 rounds, Brisbane have only won 4 more games than the Raiders have. Hardly worth bragging about.

They do have problems with players leaving etc but what's the alternative? Brisbane have made a few big name signings (Kennedy, Barba) but those guys have been unable to replicate their best form and we are now in the second half of the season.

Both clubs have coaches that are under pressure and both clubs should be higher up the ladder with the roster they've got.

Sorry to get off-topic with 'bronco bashing' as the thread is discussing how to fix the Raiders but apart from the manner that the teams are losing (hard-fought losses as opposed to being blown off the park), I'm seeing far too many similarities to my liking...

Last time I checked, we're all Rugby League fans too and we want to see a strong code.

There's a whole board dedicated to bitching about the Broncos. This isn't about bragging or comparing the two sides, just about the issues surrounding a once great club.

Maybe in the short-term you can find some similarities, but longer term it is worlds apart.

Despite the "allure" of the Hook as coach, we have still managed to sign Ben Barba and Anthony Milford. In large part, because both wanted to return to where they came from. We'll likely retain our best young talent whose come through the ranks (Ben Hunt).

The Raiders best young talent to come through the ranks is Milford. And he's ours as of 2015. Nobody wants to go home to Canberra. And given Brenko Lee almost left, nobody who comes from outside of Canberra wants to make Canberra their home.

They tried signing Tedesco and he backflipped. They tried signing Mansour and failed. Ditto Ennis. Ditto Glenn Stewart. For all the ineptitude of Griffin (and there is LOTS) we can still attract talent to our club to help patch up any issues we are having. The Raiders can only dream of luring somebody like Martin Kennedy, whereas we dream of offloading him.

The Broncos and the Raiders are two clubs travelling in directly opposite directions.

As for fixing the Raiders, it has to come down to juniors, because as I said, they cannot recruit talent. But even then, their best 3 of recent years (Dugan, Carney & Milford) are all gone. So in terms of what they can achieve, they need to find a way to rectify that. But IMO they are massively crippled by their own geography and are up shit creek with a long straw for a paddle.

Fair enough, Pete. Back on topic. . .

One of their biggest issues is player behaviour. Carney, Dugan and Ferguson are all game-breakers and on their day are just about unbeatable. I doubt these problems manifested after they were established first graders. More than likely, they played up and weren't punished heavily because of their talent, I think.

Maybe the NRL standing firm on not registering Ferguson's contract this week will help clubs like the Raiders long term. It's never quite seemed right that players can be disciplined by one club and then go and win a comp or whatever almost immediately with another. Players know that they may not get a fresh start as easy as they have in the past. It might motivate them to pull their socks up and show some pride in the club that discovered them.

I think the problem stems way beyond Stuart. They should be premiership favourites next year with a roster featuring Todd Carney, Black Ferguson, Josh Dugan, Anthony Milford, Jack Wighton and Jarrod Croker their all star backs. But they have had massive problems with their star juniors behaviour and juniors are all they have because absolutely nobody in the world wants to play for the Raiders. I think more aptly though, nobody wants to live in Canberra. Milford proves that, and with Brenko Lee almost leaving last year it's no wonder the Raiders pulled out of Logan.

I actually have a huge amount of sympathy for them. They've produced a lot of good juniors and made key off the field developments like Logan but have **** all to show for it. Frankly I think they're borderline unfixable.

Hahaha did you mean to write 'black ferguson'?

Either way I'm pissing myself right now lol

Well if the rumours of the Raiders open to signing Carney for next season are true do they really deserve to be fixed?

NRL shouldn't register his contract with them.

Carney was troubled at the Raiders & instead of helping him the enabling his behaviour by covering it up.

I can't remember what got Carney sacked from the Raiders

What did he do?

A lot of alcohol related shit.

If I remember correctly the final straw was leading the police on a car chase or something stupid like that

Frankly I don't blame them. They probably didn't have to fire him the first time and he went on to have a Dally M winning season with another club. They've since produced guys like Dugan and Milford and were essentially unable to keep either for various reasons and now they can't sign any talent (Tedesco, Mansour, Ennis, G-Stew, Moga).

This is the only way the Raiders will be able to sign a talented player. Right or wrong, it's their reality.

@Ari Gold

I would give all my earthly possessions to see Ari Gold run through Raiders HQ firing everyone.

I'd just shoot Vaughan, Papalii, Cornish and Wighton, maybe make some of them come to the Broncs.
