Hybrid game closer to a deal.

I swear each paper digs this article up and re-runs it every off season. If it didn't happen 10 years ago it's certainly not going to happen now. Insurance will now be an almost insurmountable hurdle.

Did anyone catch Hadley's call of the game? 'The Kiwi 13 passes to the 15 *gigantic pause to check team sheet* that was Smith on to Dagg'.

Scrums often require restarts, slow the game down and a fair percentage just end up being penalised anyways.

Watching some of the old 80's League games, and I don't miss scrums at all. Such an insignificant part of the game and they had way too much importance.

Yep

The same thing about teams not signing their intentions to sign the contract to play in the NRL has been rehashed.

Anyway, for shits and giggles here's a Wallaby 13.

1. Quade Cooper
2. Digby Ioane
3. Adam Ashley-Cooper
4. Kurtley Beale
5. Drew Mitchell
6. James O'Connor (played rep' league, was on an Eels scholarship as a 7)
7. Berrick Barnes
8. David Pocock
9. Will Genia
10. Tatafu Polota-Nau
11. Ant Faainga
12. Scott Higginbotham
13. Rocky Elsom

Because league scrums are soft and boring with the team feeding the scrum winning it 99% of the time, In union its an actual contest and alot of the time lead to the feeding team losing the scrum.

I disagree because:

This...

Why do we need a contest in a scrum though? If you drop the ball, why should you get a scrum and a chance to win it back?!

And this...

League is a free flowing, attacking sport. Union is a slow, tactical, excessively technical sport that's all about field position. Some people like it. I hate it. And I wouldn't be that interested in a hybrid game that takes all the tactical, slow, technical aspects of Union at the expense of the freeflowing nature of rugby league.

Actually Cox, Union is far more free-flowing than League at it's best. Nothing League can dish up can compare to a game of running Rugby. It's just unfortunate we rarely get to see it in the International arena :(

I'd be curious about a hybrid game, if such a thing ever actually comes off the ground.

As for Yawnion, I realise it can be interesting to watch when both teams play a free-flowing running game, which happens about 0.01% of the time.

The only thing I'd like to see in league, are the line-outs. Could develop into some spectacular set plays.

Yep, I can see some real benefits of line outs for balls into touch. Teams with good height and a decent throw in would get some real advantage for kicking for line. And that in turn would motivate wingers/fullbacks to chase hard to stop kicks going into touch - may see them stay back longer, leave the line more open, create more running play.

Would change the game greatly.

Would love to see it trialed.

And that's where the All Stars game is perfect for league, trial different things using our elite players.

Just when I thought an international league jumper couldn't be worth less, here comes the hybrid international jumper!

With the potential to get hurt in a union scrum league forwards would be stupid to even show up.

The possibility of getting hurt? Are you serious? That's all you have against it?

Those poor little professional athletes that are trained to run full speed into other blokes just as big as them, to be thrown on the ground. Maybe Kleenex could help them out.

You do realise that being in a pack, leading with your head and neck directly into a pack going the opposite direction is extremely dangerous right?
I mean, there's a few people on BHQ I think should stick their heads into the front row of a Union scrum, but most reasonable people I wouldn't wish it on them.

I'm not against the game - I couldn't care less about it either way. What I'm saying is league players don't know what a proper scrum is and they would be up against players who do it for a living - IMO it's a genuine threat to player safety. Why the he'll would a guy who makes 250k or more a year playing league want to risk that for a once off hybrid game that means nothing?

Just look at Ben Darwin. He had years of experience and was still forced to retire because of an injury sustained from a scrum. Why would you risk a similar fate if you are Josh McGuire or Ben Hannant etc.? Seriously, why would you risk it?
