If you could choose the channel to get the footy...

Which station? You can pick 2

There are HD set top boxes that work on old CRT TVs. You don't get the high def goodness, but you can watch the content.

My parents have an old 68cm CRT and HD STB and they can watch Gem etc.

Yeah my folks have got one of those on the upstairs TV. Works on every channel. On the other hand, my ex's parents have one that, when you try to put One HD or similar on, comes up with an error message. So I guess until those types of systems are phased out, 9 will have to keep their main station SD.

Could be an SD STB though.

I don't know what that means. But my point is, people have only just forked out the cash to go digital. If you immediately tell them that their technology is already obsolete, they'll get pissed off and just watch SD channels.

Some set top boxes only receive SD signals. Not HD. Hence the "error" that comes up on the HD channels. They still detect them, but can't show them.

And I take your point and agree.

And also agree that it's ludicrous that 7 and 9 in particular show old TV re-runs that are in 4:3 on their HD channels.

I think it's stupid that the government allowd SD STBs to be sold at all.

This reinforces my belief Ch 10 (One) will be right in the mix to fight for the league rights

CHANNEL Seven and Foxtel are poised to be announced as the winners of the AFL TV rights for the next five years.

Once the deal is announced, Seven is likely to sub-licence one or two games to either Channel Nine or Channel 10.

That outcome of any sub-licence talks remains murky, but Nine is believed have its nose in front as the most likely show at least one game.

Might see 9 make a go for the Rugby.

I hate Channel 9, but that would be awesome for Rugby. Knowing channel 9 but they will throw a commercial in halfway thru a Cooper backflip!

The AFL has confirmed a $1.253 billion TV rights deal for the next five years, which will see every game, every round of the home and away season shown live on Fox Sports.

Every game live, dedicated AFL channel.
Bloody awesome deal!!

With higher ratings than the AFL we should get a deal at least equal to that if not higher but I don't really have faith in Gallop and co.

The next TV deal is critical we need a big deal to make sure the game strives and struggling clubs can be boosted big time with a massive increase in the NRL grant to clubs which currently sits at 3.25 million if I remember right.

With a $1bn+ deal the NRL could increase the salary cap to 8 million or more with a club grant of 8-10 million meaning every club can afford it as well. This would see a massive decrease in players leaving the game and also a lot more players coming from other sports to the NRL.

They had a dedicated AFL channel. It was a failure.

What a waste of money, the AFL is always massively overpriced for the ratings it gets.

AFL can sell itself like the NRL could only dream.

The sooner Gallop is sacked the better.
Todd Greenberg should be the NRL ceo, best CEO in the game IMO and has a real business mind about him, very smart guy.

Should have grabbed John Howard when we had the chance.
Would have been a great acquisition for the game IMO.

Remember when Australia voted him out of parliament? What a bunch of idiots.

Every time I remember that, I get a happy feeling in my pants.
