I don't care if he scores every one of his tries from inside the 10m line ... what ii do think is a real worry for an NRL winger is the number of tries Maranta bombs ... many of them really are standard wingers tries that should be scored at this level

I know this opinion probably means nothing to most but thought I'd share it in this thread anyway.
Caught up with Tallis briefly tonight and asked these questions.
What do you think of Maranta ?
G: Well he's a safe winger.
But do you think he brings anything other than safe hands ?
G: He's a safe winger. ( in a dickish way)
Okay, would you choose him over Vidot ?
G: Well, to be honest no. Vidot made the most metres for them last year, he may not be as safe as maranta but he brings more.
Do you think Vidot was right to leave ?
G: Well Bennett had already decided he wasn't in the team, and when he decides something you can't change that no matter how good you are. ( again, in a dickish way )
Then he went and said when Boyd comes back he will expect to see Maranta out of the team with Copley,Kahu and Reed in the starting side.

Just for the record though, I think Maranta is steadily improving as a winger and I'm really coming around to his inclusion in the team over Vidot. He's not a game-changing winger but he is doing a the job that's required of him at the moment and that is to catch bombs and score easy tries, something that Vidot struggled with on a few occasions last year.

Agreed, however I'm happy with his inclusion for now until Boyd returns which should see Kahu slip into Maranta's spot on the right.

Just did some stats using NRL STATS. I preface this with the usual "stats don't tell the whole story" stuff.
I compared Maranta with the other winger, so Copley (round 1) and Oates.
Maranta has 49 runs for 472 metres versus 42 runs for 365 metres.
7 tackles versus 13 tackles.
2 errors versus 4 errors.
12 tackle breaks versus 7 tackle breaks.
4 line breaks versus 2 line breaks.
What does all this mean? Probably not much but my opinion is that he's not as atrocious as some may think.

Agreed. This has descended into utter stupidity imo. Firstly Maranta bets bagged because he can't score tries. Now that he is, he gets baggged because they're not "flashy" enough.
I get your point but honestly what team plays like that? Apart from Radradra who can create something out of nothing - what other winger creates their own opportunities on a consistent basis? Most of them play exactly like Maranta has been - they cap off attacking plays with the try. It's just what wingers do.

BRISBANE winger Lachlan Maranta has credited the perform or perish threat from coach Wayne Bennett as the push he needed to prove he belongs at the Broncos.
Maranta has known Bennett ever since he was a young boy playing on the floor of his coaching office where his mum worked as a secretary, but there have been no family favours as he fights for his future at Red Hill.
A forthright Bennett told the 22-year-old he needed to prove himself NRL standard and worthy of staying at the Broncos in the preseason and that honest conversation lit the fuse for a strong start to 2015.
To perhaps further test the breaking point on the young winger, Bennett made his threat public at a business lunch before the season opener when he told the audience Maranta’s position in the team was on a knife’s edge.
“He is either going to cement it or be looking for a new club. And I’ve told him that,” Bennett said at the time.
But if the first four rounds are any indication, Maranta has shown he is ready to become a mainstay of the backline.
While the likes of Daniel Vidot are hunting for a new club, Maranta has knuckled down to score four tries in the last three weeks. He managed just five tries from 17 games last season and ahead of his 47th NRL game tomorrow night against the Titans Maranta is looking more and more like the player Bennett wanted him to become.
“I think I'm the type of person when I get a challenge like that I work a lot better,” Maranta told The Courier-Mail.
“The way he worded it to me was good for my mindset knowing how I've got to prove some people wrong here and it helped me get some confidence.
“He tells me what I need to work on and I’d much prefer to know what I need to work on than what I'm doing well because that way I can take the criticism and go and work on those things.” If there is one area where Maranta excels, it’s in the air.
Unlike some wingers or fullbacks who tremble in their boots at the sight of a towering bomb, Maranta launches wholeheartedly into the air like an AFL player in full flight.
It has been advice from his cousin, former Western Bulldogs AFL defender Tom Williams, that gave Maranta the confidence few possess to go at the ball at its highest peak.
“I've taken advice from him (Williams) … I think the high balls are about confidence and if you're willing to go up to get the ball most times you get it,” he said.
“If you’re going up with the mindset that you're going to bring the ball down you've already sort of got that edge on your opponent.
“I am my own harshest critic, so if I don't bring it down I am filthy.“If you're hard on yourself you know when you're going up there you have to come down with it otherwise it is a waste of the play.”

This is starting to annoy me.
All these articles about how Maranta is improving and scoring all these tries.. Name one winger in the NRL who wouldn't of scored any of his tries this season. Literally anyone could of been plopped in the same spot as Maranta and would of scored those.

I still consider him a centre, do you rate Maranta a better attacking player than SKD ?

And we missed our fair share of tries on Vidot's side as well and the reality is his strike rate wasn't even that much better then Maranta's anyway, he played 6 more games then maranta and only 3 more tries. Hell even Reed outscored him from the same amount of matches so it's not like Vidot was a try scoring machine.
