RLIF Player of the Year Awards

I don't see anywhere in pwn's post that references Carney.. we've both been talking about how Prince hasn't got a true shot at rep level.

Pwn replied and quoted Flutterby's post on Carney.

I am referring to this. My post, which broncopwn quoted, therefore is responding to, NAMES Carney. So easy for me to assume he is saying Carney has been has been great for a long time now.

Which part is it that you all think is woeful? That Carney can't get a run in the 4 Nations or that he won all these bloody awards? For mine the woeful part is the second thing.

He actually doesn't deserve a run in the 4 Nations - he is not in better form than Darren Lockyer and teams should always be selected on form. And all these awards do is perpetuate the myth. Don't get me wrong he had a great season, but he is still a long long way from being one of the very best. I am going to be very interested to see if he can back it up next year and the year after that and so on.
He's been great for a long time now, no reason he won't back it up next year or the year after that. IMO he hasn't had a fair go at rep level.

yep - we both made a mistake mis-interpreting who was talking about whom icon_thumbs_u

how could you say the Dally M player of the year, and basically inarguably the best half of the year, doesnt deserve a run in the 4 nations?

and how could you say hes not in better FORM than Lockyer? Lockyer hadnt played for what, 8 weeks of footy before the 4 nations? how can you be in good form when you havent played for 3 months? and in that time, Carney was carving up. he doesnt have to be 'the very best' to get a spot in a representative team, he just has to be the best for that spot at the time - and you cant deny that Carney has been the best in that spot for at least the last half of the season and then the finals. yes, he was better than Lockyer, because he played more games and dominated more games than Lockyer. and quite frankly, Lockyer hasnt done anything standout-ish in the 4 nations so far, has he? Carney MORE than deserves a shot IMO. in all likelihood, Carney and Thurston are the Australian halves for the foreseeable future - why not get him started in a dead rubber?

I've said what I said and I believe it. That's my opinion and I don't need to repeat it. Your opinion is different and that's OK too.

I agreed with you Flutterby. Well said! Why are you the only one who speaks sanity around here?

Dally M means shit all. Should Matt Orford or Preston Campbell have been selected in the Australian sides on recent years?

thats great, but im asking why you believe that. if you cant back up your beliefs/opinions, dont mention them. why do you think Carney doesnt deserve it, given that he was the standout half of the year and was awarded player of the year? why doesnt he deserve it over someone who hadnt played for 3 months before the 4 nations, and even when he was playing, wasnt playing to the standard of Carney?

yes.

Incumbency is a stupid, stupid thing in rugby league when it comes to rep matches, because the length of time between matches means what happened 12 months ago has no effect on whats going on now. who gives a $hit if you 'got the job done' 12 months ago? does that mean youre the best man for the job now? in sports like rugby union incumbency is an ok thing because they play matches every month basically. players actually get in 'form' for their country. in league, theres no such thing as 'international form', because you only play a game every 6 months if youre lucky.

So you would be happy for Thurston to have been dropped as Australian halfback a few years ago in favour of Orford?

Good club player <> Good rep player

if orford was playing better, yes.

im not sayng that just because Carney won the Dally M he should automatically get chosen - as we all know, people have won dally Ms when they shouldnt have. but even disregarding Carneys dally m win, he was in superb form for the second half of the season, much better than Lockyer.

if orford was in better form than Thurston for half the season leading up to the tests, then sure, drop Thurston for him. no problems with that from me.
