I don't believe deliberately dropping the ball is a requirement. I Remember when Marshall dropped the ball, took a late minute swing at it with his foot, kicked it forward about 2 meters and picked it up to score.

The ruling there was he kicked the ball with his foot before it hit the ground, hence no knock on.

BTW, clarified with a ref about AP's "if it goes through your hands, onto your chest and forward to ground it's not a knock on" claim. He's right. Technically. However, my referee friend also said that "only an absolute noob would rule play on in that scenario, as under the fabric of the game, he's dropped the ball cold. It's a mistake".

Also says no way in the world was Gillett's a field goal. The key word is that the ball has to be "dropped from the hands". As Gillett never had control of the ball, he didn't "drop it from the hands".
 
FFS why are we arguing about something that only Gus Gould cared about?

Yes....+1.

More involvement in the backline.........more involvement trailing forwards such as Parker, Thaiday, Gillett. Those guys make a lot of little half breaks, with Hoffman trailing them he could turn them into substantial metres.

I don't want to bag him either, but his game still seems to centre around his own attacking abilities (return kicks for example) as compared to what he could provide to the rest of team.

He needs to start thinking about getting his fullback game to the next level.

BTW, I think regarding knock ons you once said it's perfectly fine if the ball comes off your head and goes forward?

From the rule book:
Heading the ball 4. It is illegal to head the ball in a forward direction.

And while you're quite correct that if the ball goes through hands backwards, onto chest, then forward under the rules is not "technically" a knock on...every referee would call it a knock on, and rightly so. Because under common sense, it's a mistake. The player failed to catch the ball and knocked it forward.

it is fine IIRC if you accidentally hit the ball forward off your head, ie someone puts up a kick and you jump for it, it bounces off your head and goes forwards, or if someone throws the ball into your face. what you cannot do is deliberately 'head' the ball forward - ie a soccer 'header'. 'head' is a verb in the sentence, not a noun. to 'head' something youre doing it intentionally, otherwise the ball is just hitting your head. there have been dozens of times over the last few years where you see a 'golden falcon' come and go without it being a knock-on, even though the ball has travelled forwards off the head.

Yes. It's implied in the wording that it has to be deliberate.

Just as it's implied in the wording "drop the ball from the hands" that in order to kick a field goal you have to deliberately drop it.

"drop" doesnt have intent though. i can accidentally drop something and i can also drop something on purpose. i cant "head" something accidentally - if its an accident, its just something hitting my head. same way as something can either hit my hand or i can punch it - one is accidental, one is intentional.

at below: if gus gould is right, hes got every right to like hearing his own voice. just because someone whos wrong doesnt care about or want to talk about it doesnt mean you should ignore it too.

You're not reading the whole phrase. "Drop the ball from the hands". That's a deliberate action. You have to have control of something to drop it. Gillett never had control of it, therefore, not a drop goal. End of debate.

there was a nice try in the sharks/eels game today that shouldve been incorrectly ruled a knock-on according to half of this forum lol.

bomb went up, got hit back, hit bukuya on the front of the shoulder/chest, bounced a few metres forwards and he jumped on it to score. was ruled that it was a fair try. who were those claiming that chest/head is a knock-on?

Oh my god. You can't be serious.

This wasn't a knock on because it didn't touch Bukuya's hands FFS. Nobody here ever said that it's a knock on if it bounces off someone's head/chest if it doesn't touch the hands or arms first!!!

If it hit his hands, then bounced into his chest and then bounced forward, it would've been ruled a knock on, and rightly so.
