They throw themselves around with that shit on and makes for some awesome collisions.

The helmets are bit much, but the chest protector and leg pads I can understand.

The unenlightened have obviously never watched an NFL game in its entirety before.
They wear protective gear because they are getting hit EVERY PLAY!
In league, yawnion and (allegedly in) AFL, players get tackled only when they have possession. In NFL, you get blocked or at least attempted to be blocked every single play. The entire offensive line (including tight ends) get smashed, off the ball, each play. In turn the defensive line (including linebackers or anyone who rushes the QB on a specific play) need protection in order to survive the collisions every single play.
You reckon smallish guys like Wallace, Lockyer, Hunt could get smashed every single play without protective equipment? LOLZNOTACHANCE.
However all that said and done, I have absolutely no doubt that if Australia had grown up on NFL, we'd be one of the best in the world, same same if the US grew up on League. All footballers (minus GayFL & Soccer players) have an athletic ability, they have tailored to their chosen sport.

I'm not a huge USA fan by any means, but we just cannot compete with them when it comes to professionalism in sport. Obviously population, the junior systems, cash and a whole range of issues play a part here, but NRL cannot compete in athleticism with the states, clean or not. (Obviously not everyone is clean)
Personally I don't enjoy the NFL at all from the limited stuff I have seen, some of the athletes will rip it up over here. BUT they would have to learn the game, whether they have the god given 'football' skills that we've been blessed to witness from players such as freddie, joey and locky, that I don't know. Furthermore, even Australia is not producing footy players now anyway, to be honest with you, the only young guns that impress me are the athletes, naturally centres and ball runners, eg Inglis and Folau but I have not seen a new locky at all. Remember freddie, joey and locky, they were special even when they started. There was something different about them, they knew how to play.

Rugby league skills wouldn't translate into NFL skills, players such as Joey, Freddy, Locky couldn't utilise their skills to play. A halfback is comparable to a QB, but trying to compare their skills set is futile because the mechanics of throwing a NFL ball are so different to what they do on a rugby league field. On the other hand, guys like Folau and Inglis have those skills that could translate to nearly every football code - strong, fast, agile, good vertical, good hand eye. They are prototypical athletes.
ps. Webcke I still think Izzy would be a good RB, think Brandon Jacobs but you could easily put him in the slot as a reciever as well.

Off topic, but speed, strength, agility, jumping and coordination I don't consider skills so much as natural attributes. Skills are things you learn and develop using your natural attributes - such as using your agility to be able to beat a defender on the outside etc. Timing to jump and catch a ball at the optimum time.
It's those skills that could be translated to any sport, NFL, AFL etc.
And there's no reason Johns, Lockyer etc couldn't use their natural attributes and develop an NFL-style throwing action the equivalent of their league passing games.
