KANGAROOS halfback Johnathan Thurston has been struck by a family tragedy on the eve of tomorrow's World Cup Test match after his uncle was bashed to death in Brisbane.

The Sunday Telegraph understands Richard Saunders, 39, was attacked by a group of men in the Brisbane suburb of Logan early on this morning.

The dual Dally M Medal-winner was informed of the news today but continued to train with the Kangaroos at Kogarah Oval and intends to play against New Zealand at the SFS tomorrow night.

The Kangaroos will wear black armbands in tomorrow's game. Saunders was the younger brother of Thurston's mother Debbie. It is alleged he had a brick thrown at him in the attack.

His agent Sam Ayoub confirmed Saunders had been killed in the attack.

"Obviously everyone is devastated, they're a very close knit family who have all taken the news very hard,'' Ayoub said.

"The family would like to request a little bit of privacy if possible in what is obviously a very tough time.''

Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart said the Australian team were rallying around Thurston. "We're doing everything in the best interests of Johnathan Thurston at the moment,'' Stuart said.

Wow, I can't believe he is still playing......
If that happened to my uncle, i probably wouldn't be able to talk for 2 days let alone play footy and not visit him..

But, his choice i guess, he obviously must have his reasons.

Hats off to him for soldiering on.

Disgusting suburb.

1am in a park at Woodridge. Recipe for trouble.

Absolute tragedy still, but if I could think of five places I don't want to be at 1am, drinking in a park in Woodridge would easily be in the top two.

Any of you guys know why he's still playing?
I mean most players seem to go home if there wife is going to get a baby.

Because he wants to play.

We would have spoken to his family last night & they may have said, play the game.

And do the wives find the babies on sale at Coles etc & hubby helps choose. [icon_razz1

LOL I was meant to say about :P

sad news, but he may have known that his uncle would have wanted to play. I'd hate to be guys in the wrong jerseys tomorrow.

If he doesnt play he risks giving the no.7 jumper to someone else (most likely Prince) for the entirety of the World Cup, something I am sure he doesnt want to do. I cant blame him for continuing to train.

Sad news for him though, hope he plays well.

If this happened to my uncle the day before a big game, I would go out and play my balls off. Hopefully Jonno does the same.

Terrible news, not just because it's a relative of a celebrity though.

Why does the media always think Logan is a suburb??? It is many suburbs!

Logan City and Logan Central are both classed as the Suburb 'Logan'.

Logan City Council consists of many suburbs.

Poor buggar. I am really going to cheer for him tonight when he gets the ball.

Terrible news. I hope the murderers get whats coming to them [icon_evillaugh
