THE Roosters will boast the NRL's hottest scrumbase trio next season, with Todd Carney agreeing to join star playmakers Mitchell Pearce and Braith Anasta at Bondi.

With incumbent NSW halfback Pearce secured until 2013, Carney will arrive at the club as a five-eighth and enable Anasta to shift to lock.

The Daily Telegraph has learned Carney and Roosters officials reached an agreement several weeks ago for the ex-Raiders ball-player to resume his NRL career with the tricolours.

Sacked by Canberra last July after a string of alcohol-related incidents, Carney is prevented from playing NRL this season. He accepted a footballing lifeline from far North Queensland two weeks ago, joining local side Atherton Roosters and playing his first game in eight months.

But it can now be revealed that Carney headed to the tropics with his future beyond 2008 already finalised after negotiating with the Roosters several weeks ago.

Although no contract has been signed, The Daily Telegraph understands both parties have agreed in principle to a four-year deal that will make Carney a Rooster until 2013.

Thought i'd add a poll to see how long people think it will take the Rooster to sack Carney for getting on the piss and causing trouble

I guess that's why Anasta was playing at lock in the trials!

Honestly, with the culture at the Roosters the way it is it's gonna be hard for him to stay incident-free re: the booze. He's obviously a good player but this will test him more than ever IMO.

He could be a rep player, he needs to serious think about how he approaches alcohol though. It's a vice for him.

He got into trouble before he even started playing for Atherton, so no way but up for Toddy.

10 minutes.

With guidance on how to stay clean from the likes of Minichello, Mason and Fittler, he should be A-OK.

Fittler? Are you serious?

Yes fittler has a no alcohol tolerance at the roosters...Coz hes sooo respected they listen to his leasdership. He himself went through the grog related isssues but hes grown up and the players look up to him.

Fitler to me still comes across as 'one of the boys'. I'm not sure that's the best way to get respect from your team, just ask Nathan Brown how well that went for him.

It's not a no alcohol policy, he allows them to drink the day after the game. I think that's worse - that's just going to encourage the players to binge drink if they know that's the only day of the week they can have a drink.

So let me get this right...Fittler has a no alcohol policy for his players...and yet Jake Friend got busted for drink driving?

Poor Jake. Must've been tied up and force fed alcohol right?

I don't know if its the Alcohol i'd be worried about at the Roosters

Remember it's an in-principle signing too. If he doesn't clean his act up over the next 12 months, it won't happen. And the first sign of another incident if/when he gets down there... it'll be curtains.

Talented bloke, and I honestly hope he can get his sh*t together.

Well yes, but a policy is useless if you don't enforce it. They were going to let Jake Friend play remember? So clearly their policy isn't enforced.

This is a big risk on the Roosters part but I hope that if it happens Carney can get his act together because he has a lot of talent which is currently being wasted because he has no self control.

Hopefully he can clean up his act before this contract begins otherwise the Roosters wont see much of his services!

Treat him like Richmond are treating Ben Cousins. Ban him from the booze during the season. Breath tests every morning at training, outside of training have him doing as much community work and promotional stuff as possible to keep him busy and stop him going out and getting drunk. If he fails at any part of that, fine him $10K and drop him down to a grade full of part-timers keen to make a name for themselves by putting an NRL star on his arse.
He's a brilliant player, and of the few NRL players I've met he was one of the friendlier ones, so I want to see him do well. But the guy doesn't need any more chances. I hope that working full time in Atherton, away from his friends, will give him a bit of perspective.

Roosters rubbish rumours of Carney deal

Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce denies that his club has secured a four-year deal with former Canberra half-back Todd Carney.

Carney was sacked by the Raiders last year and deregistered by the NRL after a series of alcohol related incidents.

He is currently playing local football in Northern Queensland for the Atherton Roosters and was recently banned from his home town of Goulbourn for 12 months after damaging property.

Reports this morning have suggested Carney has all but sealed a deal with the Roosters for next year and the Bondi-based club is keeping tabs on the number seven during his stint in Atherton.
