One year? Why? I am sure this comes across as complaining but it isn't, it is a genuine question. It seems like a lot of effort to start this all over again in...one year's time...or less.

Maybe he's backing himself to get the fullback position. so he takes less for one year before trying for fullback money

Wonder if this is to pressure whatever deal TMM gets offered

My guess is he really does want to be fullback. He either gets it and the subsequent pay rise, or he doesn't and goes somewhere he can.

I think he may still have one eye on the dolphins to see how they go next year, but perhaps he did not want to commit to an unknown.

He May also be waiting to see what the long-term plans are for the fullback position (solely based on his post-game interview in the sheds of his interest playing fullback).

The reality is we can’t afford Staggs, Cobbo, and Herbie in a backline long term if none of them are playing fullback.

The one year deal works in both our best interest as we will likely need to make some tough decisions the year after next. Herbie will either prove himself a fullback or we will move him on and bring Mariner through.

I think it’s the best outcome for all involved.

Would everyone rather keep Herbie over TMM at this point?
All depends on values. TMM feels like a stop gap fullback while Herbie is an unknown but there is no denying how immediately our defence improved since TMM started and we haven’t lost a game with him in the team.

If TMM is cheaper I’d take him over Herbie on a 2 year deal. If it doesn’t work out he’s great half depth.

We need a reliable fullback more than we need a centre.

See I think he may be more than a stop gap, but I'd also get rid of him for Walsh for example.

I guess it's worth seeing what Herbie can do there but not at the expense of current combinations that are winning well.

It’s admittedly not his preferred role and he also said his fitness isn’t there yet but he’s building into the role nicely. If he keep playing the way he is, TMM could definitely be our fullback for the next 2 seasons.

He has a lot of Boyd in his game. Biggest quality is organising defence, doesn’t make huge metres, plays a smart game as far as conserving his energy, that great cutout pass to Cobbo.

Herbie needs to learn to pass before he demands FB $$. It's a key part of a fullback's role in the modern game and he just doesn't look comfortable with it. I love him and am glad he's staying.

He also sniffs around the ruck in a smart way that Isaako and Tesi didn't really do.

Can't help but feel he's using us to get a better gig somewhere though. But as long as we benefit while he's here fair enough.

As much as i like Herbie, i think i'd rather be spending the money on another proven spine player if possible, especially when you look at the difference Reynolds has made. I wonder again if we are going to throw our cap out if we cant get Herbie or Cobbo starring at fullback.

I believe Cobbo will be a complete superstar in the near future and one of the greatest to play the game. He needs to be our fullback next year or year after and we will see the exact benefits from keeping.

you know what (and this is coming from Herbies biggest fan around these parts) ... I don't think so.

TMM has been a godsend at fullback for us ... he's been growing into the role every week, with a full pre-season under his belt in the position he could be anything.

his organising of the defensive line has been so valuable to our defensive resolve IMO

I think his time in the halves will be massive for TMM's fullback career. I'm also warming on Gamble at 6, so i think our spine is pretty close to sorted now. not the best in the league, but good enough to make us genuine premiership contenders

1 year seems a bit odd because in 6 months the speculation around his future will be in full swing yet again.
My take on it is he was all but gone however our current form has swayed him in to staying.
Maybe Kev has said to him he can have the preseason at fullback?
Whatever the reasoning, 1yr is weird.
It’s also a bit of a gamble from his side too, he is clearly backing himself.
I wouldn’t mind if we were able to keep Oates on a year by year contract.

Tend to agree which is why I think 1 year is smart from us. No big name spine player is off contract next year. We can always move him on the year after if Munster or someone is available.
