Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2022

I think that he really wants the FB position, but absolutely loves the broncos so is torn. Maybe he is trying to get the fullback position at the broncos, and if he doesn't get it before his contact is up he is gone.

Personally, I think the one year extension is because of Kevvie. Not because of a desire to play fullback, which he didn't say is a must for him.

There were serious doubts about Kevvie's ability as a head coach. Players weren't taking him seriously. While he has done really well in the past month, the jury is still out and I don't think Herbie is convinced yet.

He wants to play at a club where's going to be playing finals and where he can play his best footy among other things.

I think he wants to see how we go over the next 12 months before he decides to commit for longer.

Or the opposite could be true he only wants 1 year because walters has only been extended to the end of 2023 same could apply if cobbo only signs for an extra 12 months

I think you probably couldn't be more wrong with this. Everything is speculation but It is almost entirely likely to be about salary cap space. This is jamayne isaakos space that they freed up earlier this year. I would suggest they will wait for the pre season to move some players before a longer term deal can be discussed.

I think kevy is a better coach than what he gets credit for

Yep, I agree. He signed for ‘some’ security and to clear some air in terms of cap for now. Whether he wants (or gets) FB remains to be seen, but you’d have to imagine being on less than Oates wouldn’t sit well with him, so signing short term may resolve that, particularly if Oates moves on, or is down-graded on a future deal.

On current form I’d be sad to see Oates leave, but it’s impossible to keep everyone and there are more important players to re-sign than an ageing winger…

I think your right, we still have a guy like Brenko on the books for next year and Broncos were trying to offload him to the dolphins apparently.. maybe that was to give Herbie brenkos money but if he doesn't go were paying him next season then after that Herbie gets a top up.
I also think he wants to back himself for the fullback spot and see how that pans out

I used to fret and worry about these decisions and what I thought the club should do and live in fear that we’d somehow manage to make the wrong choice…

For once with Ikin and DD running the ship I am actually content to just sit back and know they’ll likely make the right call and I’ll look forward to supporting whoever they chose to keep in the squad and know the best possible call in the circumstances was made by the competent leaders in charge who know far more than we do.

I think they will keep the back line together for next season and then we might see some movement. Whether it's cobbo to fb. Oates will sign with the broncs on a 12 month extension as well.

We still officially have Jesse Arthurs on the books for next year as well, he is only on loan to the Warriors, but I’d bet substantial cash that neither Brenko nor Jesse are on our books next season and both get deals elsewhere, so we will find some cash out of those deals, both being genuine first graders before they came to us…

re Herbie’s passing: is he just better at left-to-right rather than the opposite he has to do out to Oates currently?

.
Would everyone rather keep Herbie over TMM at this point?
I feel like we have so many angles of attack at the moment with TMM at fullback. Herbie is a ball runner and could really develop into an elite centre.

Up until this weekend I wasn’t convinced Selwyn was a FB anytime soon. But sadly for the sake of Herbie, he is. I love Herbie both as a player and as a person but the reality is we can’t keep the likes of Mam and Mozer on top of Haas if we have Herbie running around on top dollar for his output in the centres. Sadly we will have to fill some positions with money ball propositions or Penriths next man up youth policy. What makes matters worse in order to keep Haas it will probably mean the same thing will happen with Hetho and Flegler, it will be one of the other. Same thing will probably happen with Riki and Robati. One of the other or possibly none if they both want a starting spot (presuming Piakura snags that spot by the end of 23’). You know you can have your opinion on who you want to keep but quite seriously we can’t keep them all so Farnworth’s one year makes sense whilst we can afford him. He may force us to resign him in the end. I just feel he obviously is a long shot to be a member of our spine long term and as such I think he cops the hit and has to be one of the ones who leave.

Longer term side:
1. Cobbo
2. Oates
3. Staggs
4. Mariner
5. Pereira
6. Mam
7. Reynolds
8. Haas
9. Mozer
10. Carrigan
11. Piakura
12. Capewell
13. Hetherington
14. Paix
15. Robati
16. Willison
17. Te Kura

You can shift and change the odd thing but that is roughly the trajectory. You could swap Hetho for flegs (Pat to 13) you could release Robati, Willison and Te Kura to keep the crop of Hetho, Carrigan, Haas and Flegs followed by moneyball players (e.g. Jensen). Same thing with Farnworth. You can keep him but you might lose Mariner and Oates just to finance it. It can change heaps between now and then.

My wording has probably been shit but the point is we have way more than 9.8 million worth of talent on our books that all come off contract at similar times. You lose blokes but better it be the ones you can live with/replace a bit better than the ones you can’t who are generational players e.g. Haas, Cobbo, Mozer and Mam than the lovebug who we may all love but is replaceable. Life after Reyno needs to be the focus of our squad and salary cap over the next few years and sadly I can’t see Herbie in life after Reyno. We can keep him without any subsequent damage to our cap or squad next year so I am happy we can keep our in form backline together (assuming Oates stays as well). But the love bugs time for mine is coming to an end.

Hodges left the broncos chasing the fb dream. Ends up becoming one of the greatest centres ever. Herbie can do the same

Here is actually a serious issue of Herbie playing fullback on the defensive side, would the other players actually understand his calls? This could be a legit problem.

At this stage, yeah.

TMM has been solid, but we still win 5 in a row without him. He's still got a lot to work on and it's too early to say whether he would be become a good fullback. He's had 1 actual try assist, no tries, no linebreaks in 5 games. At this stage he's not really seen as our long term solution at fullback and I don't think he will become that so there isn't much point prioritizing him over players we do want to keep long term.

Riki shouldn't be dropped put of our side completely, he puts 100% in with his effort and is a great trainer.
