THE NRL will kick off its 2010 season with an inaugural All Stars game on the Gold Coast.

An indigenous All Stars team will be selected for the February 13 encounter to play the NRL All Stars, coached by Wayne Bennett, at Skilled Park.

The match will mark the second anniversary of Australia's apology to the stolen generation, delivered by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2008.

The indigenous All Stars team, which will feature players such as Johnathan Thurston and Preston Campbell, will be coached by Thurston's club coach Neil Henry.

NRL chief executive David Gallop launched the event on the Gold Coast on Wednesday and predicted it would be "the most spectacular showcases of playing talent the game has seen."

"Stars from every club will be represented in an atmosphere that will be unlike anything we have seen before," Gallop said.

Okies, Name your teams! I think it's a great concept. As long as we don't see too many injuries.

My aboriginal team:
1 Preston Campbell
2 Willie Tonga
3 Greg Inglis
4 Justin Hodges
5 Nathan Merritt
6 Jamie Soward
7 Jonathan Thurston (C)
8 George Rose
9 Jake Friend (abo apparently) or Travis Waddell
10 Carl Webb
11 Yileen Gordon
12 Sam Thaiday
13 Cory Patterson

14 Scott Prince
15 Jamal Idris
16 Maurice Blair
17 Palmer Wapau

A few good backs miss out on the cut, very light up front and on the bench. Considering the All Stars will be drawing from a pool of Polynesians and Caucasions I think the aboriginal boys will get absolutely smashed.

Would be great to watch. I hope its on TV.

My superior team:

1. Slater
2. Turner
3. J. Morris
4. Cooper
5. B. Morris
6. Lockyer
7. Cronk
8. Price
9. Ennis
10. Hannant
11. Hoffman
12. Creagh
13. Parker

14. Kenny
15. Stagg
16. Taylor
17. Hornby

Beautifully light coloured team that one!

[icon_lol1. No Poly's?

On a serious note though, I think it's People vote 1 player from each club, the most popular player from each club get's in + a wild card...dunno if that's still the case....

I didn't actually pick that team, I just asked this bloke:

In all seriousness, I do get concerned with these sorts of games, where teams are selected on basis of race...but given that it's to signify the apology to the mythical stolen generation it's fair enough.

Scott Prince? When did he become aboriginal. He's about as Aboriginal as my left nut.

[icon_lol1. I know, I overlooked that.....and still think it'll be interesting to see players like Asotasi and Lockyer playing side by side for the first and last time kind of thing... 8-)

So your left nut can play the didgeridoo?

mrslong: I just find it somewhat ironic that to commemorate an apology for our alleged racial profiling of Aboriginal people as incapable parents we shove them in an aboriginal-only team and have them take on the rest.

Segregation is a great way to inspire reconciliation! :P

[icon_lol1. ^ Definition of irony. If this was done the other way around, I would bet it wouldn't be seen in the same light.

the whole NRL Allstars thing confuses me...wont it just be the Australian team?

No. The aboriginal players in the Aussie team will be in the Aboriginal team. Only the non-aboriginals Australians, and the non-Australians that Australia claimed will play for the NRL All Stars.

Does this mean an aboriginal cannot play for the NRL All Stars? Isn't that illegal?

Yes, although it's not illegal that Darren Lockyer can't play for the Aboriginal All Stars....DOUBLE STANDARDS!!!! :P

LOL.

I am guessing the Aboriginal 17 will be picked first, and non-picked aborigines will still be eligible for the All Star team. Note it's NRL all stars...not Australian all stars. So Kiwis, Poms, Lebos, everyone is eligible.
