First Injury - Maranta

Sounds like what the media do with a former or current nrl player who was never really a big star, suddenly becomes an immortal overnight when they get in trouble. You ask them prior to the incident they wouldn't even know who you were talking about.

Shattered for him. If we're judging players purely on effort and determination, Maranta deserves a reward like an All Stars berth.

Sad for lachie. That sucks..

I can't help but think it's a positive overall for the team. .

When Boyd went down last year it gave jordy a chance to shine, then went he went down, lachie got his chance. All part of the circle of luck.

Excited to see carlin get a spot now with reed out for a few.. His chance to impress - prove his worth.

I can't wait to hear what FIH has to say about this.

Bummer for Maranta and hopefully Anderson or Eden takes their opportunity and the team doesn't suffer but this is why I was so shitty about losing Copley. Now we are going to have a rookie winger for the first month of the season and not because their form demands it but because we have run out of experienced backs already. When Hodges retired we should not have had to lose Copley to buy Roberts. Clearly Hook was paying overs and the cap got squeezed. Having said that I wouldn't be surprised if Anderson took his opportunity and holds his spot for the season. He is an exciting talent.

Why is Anderson all of a sudden a certainty?

Not a certainty, but he has a big future, and with what he showed last year Bennett would certainly looking for a way to test him in the top grade.

With our team now missing effectively an entire #2-5 from last year (Maranta, Reed, Hodges, Copley), and only Roberts recruited, now's the perfect time. And with Roberts, Kahu & Oates having proven their worth, it's a good chance to throw a rookie in (as opposed to playing it safe and throwing in Whitchurch which would arguably be "safer").

Couldn't of explained it better. .

Anderson clearly impressed Wayne last year enough to earn a 25 contract and now's his chance to prove how much he wants to play first grade. Expect him to play 9s.

I think Anderson is going to get huge time this year and I would not be surprised to see him as first choice by seasons end. Naturally that is said knowing injuries can strike at anytime but if all things stay intact.....It's bad luck for Maranta and he has been a great clubman and lionhearted in his efforts for the Broncos over the years yet I can't shake the feeling that he has played his last game in first grade. I was thinking he may not make his way back into the team with others favoured last year even when he was fit.

Are we sure Reed is still missing the first month? That was the the prognosis back in October, but since then I've only heard that the rehab is going well.

im certainly hoping Anderson shows his wares early in the season... how electric would it be to see milf roberts and him burn up the backline!

and it would be a shame for maranta.. at least in the short term (although if he pulls a Mick Hancok and sticks around his future may be extended etc etc and duly rewarded where he otherwise might not be)

but realistically, looking at the coach's selection strategies.. more and more in recent times selecting a flashy youngster when there's a more experienced option isnt usually the go, is it?

anyways good luck to maranta hope he's up & running (and Jackie Reed) by S.O.O. time when arguments (will hopefully) subside and most of us will agree they will be needed..

It depends on what he's trying to achieve.

At Newcastle, he was trying to instill a winning culture in the short term by signing former champions. The rationale was that their experience would rub off on the younger players and he could create a roll on effect for the next generation of stars coming through. It appeared to be working when he got the Knights into the prelim finals, but a horrific start to the 2014 season undid a lot of his work. He still left Stone with a very viable squad of talent with Gagai, Leilua, Roberts, Mata'utia, Mamo, Levi, Tapine etc. with room for improvement but Stone failed to get the best of his young charges.

In Brisbane, it's a little different. He's already got the pieces in place, his only concern is getting the most out of those pieces. Which is why Reed was preferred over Kahu and Copley in the centres. Because at the end of the day, Reed did a better job of protecting Milford than those players did. In effect, I believe Bennett tries to pick a balanced line-up. He's already got the strike players in Milford, Hunt, Roberts etc. so picking players who will do their job is the upmost importance. Whether that's Anderson, Eden or other players like Opacic, Pearson, Alick or Te Rupe is yet to be determined.

As exciting as Anderson is, I wouldn't be surprised to see him selected as second or even third preference. I think Wayne will be patient and will select him when he thinks he's ready, or has his hand forced.

yeah agree with that, for sure he has the bedrock of a successful squad here and now so he can afford to take a gamble on a non-spine spot here and there. and as a flashy youngster id guess that the staff wouldnt likely squeeze someone like an anderson him into a new-ish team with the injuries and before the momentum starts to build again.. more likely during origin or against a struggling tea, or something youd think, or of course if his hand is forced.

shits and giggles i spose, who really knows. but id say an eden whitchurch or opacic who's had just a bit more of a run with the 1sts if we're talking stop-gap measures
