POST GAME Round 19 - Rabbitohs vs Broncos

The Brisbane Broncos have snapped a two-game losing streak with a resounding 30-10 win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

Having struggled through the State of Origin period, Brisbane roared back into form on the back of a dominant backline performance despite losing centre Jordan Kahu midway through the first half with a suspected pec injury.

The Rabbitohs were dealt a huge blow before kick-off with halfback Adam Reynolds ruled out with a quad strain and it showed with their attack failing to click throughout the contest.

It took just five minutes for the Broncos to get on the board with a perfectly-weighted pass from Darius Boyd sending Lachlan Maranta over to expose the Rabbitohs' inexperienced left-edge defence.

A Sam Thaiday error gifted the hosts a chance to respond, and right on cue Luke Keary dummied his way over from close range to level the scores after 12 minutes.

Parity was short-lived as a Tom Burgess error from the kick-off put the Broncos straight back on the attack to allow halfback Ben Hunt to step his way through for his first try since Round 8 – also against the Rabbitohs.

Poor handling was killing the Bunnies, and another knock on – this time by Walker – resulted in a spectacular try to Corey Oates in the left corner to open up a 12-point lead inside 20 minutes.

Brisbane looked to have extended their advantage early in the second stanza when Maranta strolled over for his second but the play was called back after a forward pass from Hunt.

The Broncos winger was again denied 10 minutes later after putting a foot on the sideline following some terrific play on the inside from Hunt and James Roberts.

With his outside-man seemingly cursed, Roberts decided to do it all himself in the 55th minute, stepping off his right foot and fending away from two would-be defenders to jet his way over the line to make it 24-6.

Maranta then had another try called back for a forward pass, but there would be no such problems for his fellow winger as Oates intercepted an Aaron Gray pass to race 90 metres to claim his 12th try of the season.

Having been held scoreless for almost an hour, the Rabbitohs grabbed their second of the night through fullback Cody Walker to give the 13,111 fans in attendance something to cheer about.

Broncos 30 (Corey Oates 2, Lachlan Maranta, Ben Hunt, James Roberts, tries; Jordan Kahu 3, Anthony Milford 2 goals) defeated Rabbitohs 10 (Luke Keary, Cody Walker tries; Cody Walker goal) at ANZ Stadium. Half-time: 18-6 Broncos. Crowd: 13,111. On report: Andrew McCullough (high tackle).

Maranta best on field.

Hope your joking. His the only player that could have bombed that try in the second half. Twice Roberts got on the outside of the winger opening up a gap in the inside and maranta runs beside him. Just before halftime gets pushed out.

If Thaiday was dropped, would anybody here notice? He just seems to do nothing these days.

The boys played like a team working hard to find some form. A few moments of brilliance by Roberts and Oates. Hunt and Milford getting much more involved. Some very good scramble defence. All in all, tonight was exactly what we needed.

I'd notice the error count improving and the missed tackle count lowering...

Would Thaiday be missed? Exactly what is his role in the side? Stat wise your not going to argue he is there as a worker which makes me think it's impact or enforcer I certainly don't think for a player of his profile he is a consistent threat to the opposition. He has some moments but they are so few and far between. Honestly I would say no he wouldn't and I just wonder where his future lies?

I would be happy to for Thaiday to be moved on. He seems more interested in being a media personality these days, surely he'd free up some cap space for a better forward.

Good win. Just the good confidence booster we needed going into the run home. I'm giving Hunt my 3 points. He guided the team to victory tonight. Running the ball like his old self AND making awesome general play kicks. And did I see a bit of him giving players around him the verbals at one stage? Directing the troops, why isn't he captain next year?

Milf had a.....weird night. Average as **** in attack but his defence against Burgess. What the ****, man. That was an ungodly effort, all things considered. It was also great to see Roberts finally cut loose and tear them to ribbons. The dude has the agility of a Briar Rabbit

Yes you did. One notable spray at McCullough after he derped up for the umpteenth time in the second half in attack. Good defensive effort from McCullough, apart from a loose swinging arm by him that will probably see him from the judiciary, but attack-wise he was very ordinary for the most part.

All those forward oases from Hunt. Who does he think he is James Maloney?

I wouldn't be bothered by letting Thaiday go, a general clean out in the squad would help.

If only he had more than 10cms of room to work with.

Yep. I will give Kahu this season but he is injured far too often.

Kahu is becoming a liability of late. Getting injured all the time.

He needs to never play centre, ever again. He gets hurt EVERY time. Seems to be fine on the wing though.

Got no-one better to replace him though... Wayne seriously needs to find us some at least one more quality outside back and some better depth moving forward.

Seve, Isaako and Opacic. The first two will be knocking on the door hard sooner rather than later.

Boyd - Is super consistent these days and just so level headed, he has come a long way and is now a very important cog in our plays. Excellent game. 8.5
Oates - What a star, was close to best player on field tonight, has become pretty consistent when not injured. 9
Kahu - Well, if you going to get injured, come back early and make it worse, good goal-kicking though. 4
Roberts - Was on fire and it was clear the team has come up with a way to utilise him during the bye. 8.5
Maranta - Like others, I used to defend this kid but he has gone backwards somehow. Shocker. 2
Milford - As mentioned, defense was rock-solid, attack spluttered. Weird game. 6
Hunt - His best game of the year...easily. He took control out there, was urgent in attack and defense, scored a nice try and threw some beautiful NFL style rippers. Not perfect but a LOT better. 8
McGuire - Phenomenal as always and an absolute consistent gem. 8.5
Macca - He is the best we have at 9, unfortunately. Copped a rightful spray from Hunt, had his blood knocked out of him and tackled his heart out as always. 5
Blair - Storm Teddy was back tonight, great game. 8
Glenn - Smashed one beautiful tackle, ran good lines and didn't put a foot wrong. 7
Thaiday - He was there at times and not there others, aside from dropping the ball, barely noticed. 5
Arrow - Got his first start and did not do anything wrong, showed some of those Parkeresque workaholic tendencies which we all know and love. 7

Wallace - Why was he wearing headgear? Solid but not as spectacular as he has been of late. By no means bad at all. 7
Joffa - Worked hard, tackled hard and ran like the wind...was in his face. He's re-found his mojo. 8
Ese'ese - He was there because I noticed him once or twice. 5
Pangai Jnr - He played right? I just honestly didn't notice him, the bench kind of all rolled into one at times. 6

I'm not jumping up and down claiming "We're back" just yet.

Surely we can string together a few wins the next couple of weeks. Playing a couple of poo teams in Panthers and roosters. Then we should well and truly be back.
