POST GAME Round 19 - Rabbitohs vs Broncos

Blair was actually hitting the line at speed and not looking to ball play - he can absolutely be a creative force but with Milf and Hunt that's not what we need.

When McG went down last year Blair stood up as a hard-nose metre eater and look where it got us... More of that please.

Someone seriously needs to do to Reed what I did to Harry Sack... fucking steal that voodoo doll he has of the Broncos left centre position!

Thaidays defence was good. He made at least one try saver I can remember around the legs and filled in nicely for Gillett down that edge and helped Hunt.

His attack however, was impotent. The guy is a starting QLD and Australian Backrower and can't dent the line at all. His hit into the defensive line and drop for zero meters isn't effective, especially when Souths are allowed to lie on us in the ruck for nearly 5 seconds every tackle.

I thought Arrow had a good game and Blair was strong through the middle. When he just runs hard and straight, he can be damaging.

Next week will be a test, but the boys need to dispatch the Panthers if we're serious about pushing into the top 4/ contending in the finals. The dogs are honestly punching above their weight big league, so that fourth spot is open if we're good enough.

EDIT: we need an actual centre who can play out the game, even if that man is Reed (god forbid). When was the last game that we got through a game without injury forcing a player off?

What are you talking about? Reed is a gun.

Bennett always had a couple of decent utilities of first-grade standard stashed away in case of emergency. He even took Emmett down to the Dragons with him for this very reason. He was perfect - no superstar but was safe, did his job with no fuss, could even play as a bench forward if necessary. Whitchurch arguably could have been that player but is as derpy as Maranta.

Once again, had to listen to the game on the radio and only saw the highlights this morning. That Oates near-try was reminiscent of Vidot vs the Sea Eagles, where he bulldozed 3 defenders and got it down in the corner. I was a fan of Vidot, with his metre-gaining ability, but geez, Oates offers almost as much in that department but adds genuine speed and the finishing ability of a freak modern-day winger. Lost for words.

Hopefully Reed is back next week, fit and healthy. He's not my pick but we need stability at the moment so anyone who can get through a whole game will be suffice at this point. Glenn goes back into the second row and we get parker and hopefully Gillett back. If the same effort is there we should win. Nothing flashy last night but I could definitely see some confidence returning and I reckon they'll be itching to get out there next week and improve again. Blair really stood up last night, that hit he put on that little **** Keary was beautiful!!! Made my night. Hunts kicking game was spot on and with Macca and Milford kicking aswell it all seemed a bit more balanced. The bombed try's just lacked a bit of polish but that is to be expected from a side who has been down on confidence, they'll be better next week.

That game was just about what I expected, sure, it was only Souths, typically the Burguess boys dropped the ball on cue.
Souths were absolutely desperate for the 2 points and they threw everything they had at us and we kept them to 1 try till the game was done and dusted so so defensive effort was excellent. We on the other hand were desperate for some cohesion & form and we got it and IMHO it was always coming once SOO was over. That scoreline would have been a whole lot wider if we didnt have so many disruptions from SOO, injury & suspension. The Broncs will continue to improve and they will peak at the right end of the season.
There was improvement across the park. Glenn's defensive effort was superb and the little bloke along side him wasn't that far off him.
Well done Broncs, revenge against the Panthers next week will not only be sweet but it will give us another opportunity to get some better timing, even more cohesion & another 2 points in the bank. Jump on board everyone the season is about to start.

Any word on Kahu? Should we expect him back next week?

And has there been anything new on Reed?

I think Hunt summed up that performance well "a step in the right direction". Hunt , himself, looked pretty sharp last night.

I din't usually like being too negative after a win , but in the second half our defensive line look nearly stationary at times. Quite frankly the guys looked exhausted at times and ready for the sword , but inept execution by Souths let us off the hook.

A lot of people seem to be calling for the return of Reed. Is he really the best available center?

That was an important win for us, with the Dogs still to play us again and the Cowboys twice as well as the Raiders still to play the Sharks and Storm we are certainly still in a position to claim a top 4 spot.

The only problem with that tho is our first game in the finals will most likely be a tough away from home game against either the Sharks or the Storm.

I hope Boyd being named captain last night is a sign of things to come next year when Parker has retired

I think he is the best option we have right now presuming he is fit... I think everyone would prefer Kahu there but he's cactus. Opacic might have been the answer but he's gone too...apart from bringing in some random, which at this stage of the season isn't ideal Reed is our only option. Never know, Reed could come back into the side and play out of his skin.

I'd be keeping Glenn at center if Reed is our only option.

He offers more than Reed defensively, and isn't too bad on the attacking side of things.

plus we have enough backrowers to cover his temporary move

Tell that to Melbourne.

I know you have a bit of an agenda against Reed and you hate him... But overall our left side has been stronger with him there.

Reid's defence is reasonable, it's improved under Bennant but he struggles head on, he is good at tackling from the side, in fact he lets them get past him a little and drills them. Trouble with that technique is that if its someone speedy, shut the gate.
As for Glenn he is a real option at left centre, against Melb he was covering inside for MILF & outside for Nikorima. With Oats on his outside we wont lose anything with that option.
